Top 10 Things to do in Lavrio, Greece

March 31, 2018 Sachiko Swiger

Laurium or Lavrio or Lavrion (Greek: Λαύριο; Ancient Greek: Λαύριον; before early 11th century BC: Θορικός Thorikos; from Middle Ages until 1908: Εργαστήρια - Ergastiria) is a town in southeastern part of Attica, Greece. It is the seat of the municipality of Lavreotiki. Laurium was famous in Classical antiquity for its silver mines, which was one of the chief sources of revenue of the Athenian state. The metallic silver was mainly used for coinage. The Archaeological Museum of Lavrion shows much of the story of these mines.

Me and my girlfriend went with these guys on two dives and definitely got what we payed for and more!
Everything from start to finish was just awesome.
Everyone involved were so nice and helpful, and they are pure professionals.
We talked to lovely Caterina who got everything ready for us and explained really well how everything would work.
We then got the wonderful Vassilis who picked us up from our hotel and went with us on the dives. The equipment is really great both new and comfortable.
Vassilis made us feel really safe on both dives by having everything crystal clear.
They then went above and beyond by taking us to the Poseidon temple located about 15 min from the diving center and told us all about its origin and history.
And not to leave out the wonderful Kostas or the Boss who is just one of the kindest people ever.
All in all if you want to dive in Greece go with planet blue!

We walked in here on a Saturday night at 11 PM and it was packed with locals. We took a seat in the outside-ish section that was more quiet and restaurant-like.
After we ordered drinks and a pizza (HUGE!) a table opened up inside, so we snagged it. The atmosphere is much more fun inside, lots of chatter and a really good mix of music. We sat next to a bookshelf with many interesting books and board games to entertain us.
I ordered a mojito, which I normally never do outside of latin america, however it was actually pretty good! The boys got the house beer, which they said was also good.
Out waiter was friendly and conversational. Very busy, but we still had decent service. Pizza was brought out on a huge table top platter, plenty to share between 3-4 people. Lots of cheese on the margarita, which was appreciated :)
Definitely a must-go for drinks in Lavrio.

We visited the Ancient Theater of Lavrion with friends who are familiar with the area. At the time of our visit there was a team of archeologists working there. The ancient theater is a large, impressive stone outdoor structure. We were there on a bright sunny day making the visit even more enjoyable. Aside from the stone Seating area little else remains of the original building. It is a privilege to be present in a place that has remained standing for thousands of years and represents the cultural accomplishments of our ancestors.

We enjoyed our visit to the Mineralogical Museum of Lavrio. We viewed many wonderful mineral specimens extracted from the area of Lavrio. The Museum is small, but the contents are fascinating, especially to those who have an interest in minerals and ores.
The staff was helpful and knowledgable. Small specimens are available for purchase as well as picture post cards of the various minerals showcased in the Museum.
It was a most informative and instructive experience and we hope to visit the Museum again the next time we are in Lavrio.

Archeological Museum of Lavrion

We were exploring this area as we were particularly interested in finding out about the Ancient Silver Mining Industry. This museum makes a great start for an exploration. They have a good (if slightly dated) display on the processes used. They also have a good collection of artefacts - don't miss the grinders that are in the courtyard outside. They also had a map of locations to sites in the hills which you can visit - no leaflet, we photographed it!
Another bonus was they have sections of the Sunion Frieze.
