Exhibits and collections reach back in time from the start of the museum in the mid-1800s until recent installations covering current trends and development. So yeah. It is a naval museum, but it is far more than that.
The old part of the exhibit has been almost unchanged for the last 50 years, and probably is not terribly different from what it was 100 or 150 years ago. They have removed a bit of clutter, the museum has an impressive collection of old notes and coins, among other things, that has been removed as being totally irrelevant to the naval aspect. Some of the various parts of the exhibit has been rearranged gently to create more theme-based rooms. They have also found room to add some plaques with explanations here and there, a great sea battle 3-d map, and generally tidied the place up a bit. I have been visiting the museum on a semi-regular basis for half a century now, and I like the changes. More informative, while keeping some of that cluttered and slightly unfocused feel of old museums. The museum Exhibitions have been expanded twice since I have known the museum, and I know they have more plans.
My heart however, belongs to the old part, where my great-grandfather once worked.
The museum contains memorabilia, souvenirs, tools, weapons, models -oh, the models are wonderful, paintings, flags, instruments, cutlery and Just everything imaginable and a few things that aren't. I swear they have a genuine cat-o'nine tails, Age of sail surgical instruments and other scary things: A mummy's foot, bows and arrows and other, literally outlandish souvenirs. Brought home by navy officers and donated to the founder of the collection.
Situated in beautiful buildings in the old naval main yard and base, surrounded by ships and with a great library and magazine full of hidden gems, Marinemuseet in Horten is definitely worth a visit. Or two. Be aware that in low season, the museum only have open on Sundays.

The Centre is located in the cultural park at Karljohansvern. The Centre took over the former infirmary of the navy and changed it into a museum exhibit comprising authentic surroundings and trades of the near past, such as cobbler workshop, forge, carpenter workshop, classroom, grocery store, to mention a few examples. The centre has its own Reading room with library consisting of an archive of photographs, drawings, maps, newpapers, documents and books. The coffee shop is found at the mouth of the canal in beautiful surroundings at the inner harbour. Opening hours: Sunday 11-15 Entrance: NOK 1,-
The museum has collected interesting items from the local community of Horten. The collection is divided in separate sections - all taking you at least 50 - 60 years back in time: a clasroom, a grocery store , a living room and a kitchen from the 1950s. A friendly atmosphere directs you to the small cafe, where you can buy coffee and local cakes and waffles . The museum is staffed by volunteers from the local community, who also have established this museum .

We visited Buggegården a few weeks ago. What a nice place for children and adults. Really good and friendly service. The kids enjoyed contact with the animals at the farm. You can ride a horse, cuddle rabbits, see the pigs, cheep, duck, hens and so on. Plenty toys to play with and nice homemade pastry. The really nice garden with plenty chairs and tables for the adults to chill out while the kids are busy exploring the grounds. They even have a small theatre play for the kids. Highly recommended!

Midgard Historical Centre is the centre for Vestfold’s Viking history. It is located with good view of the majestic Borre mounds, and here you can experience Exhibitions, lectures, family activity days, festivals and much more. You can also visit The Viking Hall, located about 200 metres from the Midgard Centre. The Viking Hall is a mighty mead hall constructed to give an impression of the great halls that once stood tall in the landscape of Borre.
The museum (Midgard Historical Centre in Borre) is actually in four parts. First you may want to see the exhibition, with many interesting findings from viking graves.
Then you may want to go outside and try the viking playground. It offers a wide range of “Viking activites” such as throwing axes on wooden poles, shooting with a bow and arrow and learning how to master skills the Vikings needed in daily life. The staff is very friendøy, and will help you. This is a "must" if you bring children.
You should then walk to the "gildehall" - an impressive big building showing how the vikings could build monumental, tall buildings from wood. It is much more interesting than it sounds. The building resembles a church, actually, but was used for partying and celebrations.
Finally, you may talk a walk in the park with the huge viking grave mounds. They show that Borre was a place of power and influence in Europe during the Viking Age.
This attraction is highly recommended for families with children, but also for adults interested in the Viking age. It has a small cafe, and a small store where you may buy viking-books, bow&arrow, and other viking articles. There is a small entrance fee, if you want to see the exhibition and the "gildehall".

This is a beautiful park located only a short distance from beautiful Åsgårdstrand. It is near the fjord and is beautiful for kids to play. There are walking paths so visitors can easily view the many Viking graves in the park, and also has a fun visitors center with a nice cafe. Beautiful area not far from Oslo! Perfect for history lovers and anyone interested in the Vikings.

The Basto ferry operating between Moss and Horten carries 2.5 million people annually. There are three Ferries operating. Crossing time is 30 minutes.
The ferry is not to bad, but the food sold in the cafeteria is expensive and medium quality. The trip do not last very long between the two cities, so no real reason to buy food in the boats restaurant.

Pilgrims from all the Nordic countries came here. The Reformation in 1536 put an official stop to the catholic pilgrimages to Lovoya but people continued to come to the well and church for years on. The church was in ruins for many years until preservation and restoration was initiated in 1882 and it was reopened in 1950.
This beautiful chapel lies in Horten, Norway. It is made of all stone and dates back to 13th century. Its location, Løvøya, lies down by the sea surrounded by trees which makes it truly magical. Worth a visit if you are around. There is also a well which you can throw coins into for good fortune. Suitable for all ages.
