Breathtaking Kristiansand was first settled in the early 5th century, with its modern iteration founded by King Christian IV in the mid 1600s. Home to many cultural, music, and arts festivals, the Norwegian city pulses with creative energy. Several museums celebrate local history and natural features, and the trails of Odderoyja are a wonderful way to breathe in fresh air while mingling with locals. Historic Oddernes church is a blend of architectural styles.

Tasty seafood dishes served in an elegant maritime setting close by the 'Fiskebasar'. Choose from our extensive a la carte menu: fish, shellfish and meat dishes. Herring buffet on Saturdays. Separate lunch menu. Courses and conferences catered for. Fully licensed. Open from 11/11.30 a.m.
The raspberry custard dessert with a scoop of vanilla looked like an omelette :-) and tasted delicious. Very clever! A conversation item all night.
This topped off a very nice seafood dinner. Our table had salmon, monkfish with purple sauce (potatoes) and halibut with gazpacho. All were good.
This is a solid choice for dinner with good service. We would go again.

Bakgarden Bar is one of the most prestigious bars in Norway with over 1100 different brands of spirit. We've served perfectly balanced cocktails for 25 years and will continue doing so for the 25 next. We serve #everydaygourmet in a relaxed, yet delicate fashion. We welcome all guests into our backyard as we would our best friends in our private living rooms. Enjoy.
Great restaurant centrally located in downtown Kristiansand. Good food and a varied menu. Prices in line with other places in the area.

Sjohuset Restaurant has for nearly two decades been a landmark among Kristiansand's finest restaurants. Here you're served fish and shellfish of supreme quality, lobster fresh from our tank - and a good selection for those who prefer meat. Idyllic location on the waterfront makes a perfect setting for a memorable meal. On the outdoor restaurant you can enjoy a full meal or have a refreshment in the evening sun. Open (kitchen): 17.00-22.00. From April open from 11.00.
There's no denying the lovely views at this pleasant waterfront restaurant, but it comes at an equally pretty price simply because of the high the cost of living in Norway. The cost of a hamburger, salmon and one beer was a little over $100. The salmon was incredibly fresh and delicious, and the burger with pommes frites was fine. I don't begrudge a penny but wanted to advise people visiting Scandinavia for the first time to be prepared for sticker shock.

Deilcious food, welcoming and attentive staff and nice facilities. Suffering from severe shellfish allergy, I have never experienced a more flexible approch and positive attitude from any kitchen/staff with this kind of menu to my situation - considering that even the slightest contact with shellfish from even the kitchen tools would cause major allergic reactions.

My wife, baby and I came here a couple of times, and thought it was really good. It doesn't look much from the outside, but it's pretty nice inside. You can also sit outside if you like. Service was friendly. Food was good (they do sandwiches and bagels and stuff). We both had the "French kiss" Sandwich, which was excellent. The only negatives: we couldn't see much in the way of cakes, and somewhat disappointingly there was no wifi.

Everything that we serve, is carefully planned and follows our philosophy that is sustainable for both the environment and people in its entirety, We believe that what we eat is an important part of every day life, and if you eat good, then you too will feel good,. We try our hardest to provide you with feel good food and source our ingredients from our surroundings, using only the best of the produce available. TilStede mat og mer offers an exciting menu with a special blend of sea food, vegetarian dishes and raw food. We are following the different seasons to get fresh vegetables that are locally produced and all our fish is from sustainable sources. Our dishes are made from scratch with alot of love.
Tilstede mat og mer is the first and the BEST place for vegetarian/vegan food lovers in Kristiansand. With an extremely friendly staff (including the chefs) this restaurant has one of the best ambiance in town.
Their menu is refreshing, quirky and always wonderful. You can begin your meal with a detox lemon (for the faint-hearted) or the ginger shot (for the bravehearts). Their soup of the day with the bread and cashew dip are a specialty. For the main course you can choose from the day's special in addition to the a-la-carte. And top off the meal with a raw-food dessert.
During the summers the Terrace is a wonderful annex to spend the afternoons and evenings. Their mantra is sustainability and they are active in local events and support local artists of the region display their work at the restaurant. I have been to Tilstede many times over the last 4 years and have always had my taste buds satiated.

Handverkeren is located in the heart of Kristiansand - there is literally an actual heart in the ground just outside, signifying the geometric centre of "Kvadraturen". The biggest pub and restaurant in town, preparing food on a unique charcoal grill (served until 10pm every day). Majestic rooms, grand furnishings and great atmosphere - open until 2am seven days a week. Pool, table tennis, shuffleboards, darts, chess and other pub games are also available.
This was not the first visit at Håndverkeren (name means craftsman/woman). It's a place for pub and pubfood, restaurant, billiards, shuffleboard, quiz and live music. So in a way it's something for everyone.
Our visit was mainly for a concert, something that happens regularly, a good place for new bands. We started out selecting the local brew, CB , which is a fine lager. But they've got a good selection of both Norwegian and foreign beers. And wine if that's your poison. One of us chose consistantly Newcastle Brown on tap. Like I said, we didn't come for the food, but chose some minor dishes off the menu. I had some chicken wings that were juicy, warm and crisp, two types of sauce and strips of uncooked carrotts and celery also, but I wasn't hungry so I didn't try the fries. One female friend seemed happy with her salmon filets.
We arrived this windy Saturday in January just after 7pm and apart from the concert at 9.30, all other activities were in full bloom but quiz is on Fridays. The Concerts are in a separate part of the building just off the main bar, but with it's own bar. A bit narrow is the space but room for let's say max two hundred.
So to my question about craftsmanship: I'd say a yes. The new owners have succeded as long as you don't go looking for that Michelin star, it's not like that. But it's nice, friendly and has an air of companionship. Recommended!
