Nyhavn

Copenhagen's Nyhaven, or "New Harbor," is actually steeped in a long heritage. Colorful buildings line the canal and hint at a history of small-vessel traffic. Like many ports, this strip has a salty history, rich with sailors, drinking and Literary exploits. Danish author Hans Christian Andersen made his home in Nyhavn as well. It's cleaned up now and is a lovely place for a stroll.

So, this was one of our 1st stops in Copenhagen simply because of its iconicism...if that’s a word. Whenever I saw anything about Denmark...I saw that picture of colorful houses. For me it was underwhelming perhaps because of the grey, cold weather...but it is a must and we did have the place to ourselves pretty much. So we took many pics. We had a little chai latte in one of the tourist trap eateries and moved on. Great spot for that photo opp.

A splendid musseum about the farmers from Holland on the order of King Christian IV in 1521. Many traditions are still alive like fastelavn and the local society of farmers and their children's children. Also the church nearby is wonderful and the names on the stones of the graveyard.

Tivoli Gardens

From mid-April to mid-September, a world-class amusement park comes to life in the center of Copenhagen. More than two dozen rides await you, in addition to live entertainment and more than 30 eateries.

We went to Tivoli on the 2nd day it was open for the spring season and it was decorated beautifully. Made for some fabulous pictures. We had a Copenhagen card but did not realize that you pay to enter and then you also pay for any rides and of course any food/drinks. Not unlike other “theme” parks. The weather was cold and grey so we did not feel like doing any rides, but we did enjoy walking around and seeing 2 of the shows offered. Quaint theme park with so much history. We went out of the park for dinner and then came back for coffee/dessert and to see the laser show. It was worth it. You shouldn’t miss Tivoli especially around the Easter season.

We had the good fortune of meeting Carlos during a kite boarding visit to Barbados. He helped make our trip a success. He is amiable, an incredible athlete and most importantly for an instructor very responsible and safety oriented. For Northern European kiters, ask him to arrange a January Caribbean trip. Next summer, I'm planning to see him in Copenhagen.

I visited Denmark on a business trip (I work for a Danish company in the US) and was impressed with CPH airport’s variety of shops when I was inbound to my conference in Herning. Stopped at the Georg Jensen shop in CPH on my way home. Found a great piece to bring the hubs as a gift from my trip. The ladies who assisted me were super friendly...asked if I was traveling outside the EU and was I headed home. I said that I was and they said “great...we can save you some money.” They had me fill out a Danish tax form and bam! I saved over $60 on my purchase (off the item’s stated price of $245). This only works, I believe, when you are on your way home and not when you are going into Denmark. Great shop filled with objects created by this fine, Danish brand and great sales staff!

Illums Bolighus

Illums Bolighus has opened a new store where smoked oak in combination with black details create the surroundings for specially selected Scandinavian designs. In the new exclusive store you can find jewelleries from Danish designers as Maria Black, Line&Jo, Dyrberg/Kern, Maria Zabel and Arena, which are accompanied by bags from Decadent as well as Bering and Arne Jacobsen watches. The new universe is definitely worth a visit if you need to buy a little piece of Danish luxury as a present or simply wish to treat yourself.

Lakrids by Johan Bulow. Ready for take off? Once upon a time in 2007 on the small Danish island of Bornholm, there was a young man who worked so hard to bring his idea to life: He wanted to create the world's best liquorice. Nothing less. His name is Johan Bulow, and today you can buy Lakrids by Johan Bulow in gourmet shops in Denmark, a few places in New York and London, and you can also find his own shops in Tivoli and Magasin. Johan Bulow has from the beginning been trying to raise awareness of liqourice. Not only for sweets, but also as a gourmet experience. With the new shop – placed where the whole world meet, the ambition of spreading his love for liquorice worldwide should be within reach. The shop has the full range - both sweet and salt liqourice, liqourice coated in chocolate, liqurorice syrup and powder, last but not least the sticks as the entire adventure began with. We look forward to give you a taste of the black magic. But beware. It can be highly addictive.
