Celle (German pronunciation: [ˈtsɛlə]) is a town and capital of the district of Celle, in Lower Saxony, Germany. The town is situated on the banks of the river Aller, a tributary of the Weser and has a population of about 71,000. Celle is the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath, has a castle (Schloss Celle) built in the Renaissance and Baroque style and a picturesque old town centre (the Altstadt) with over 400 timber-framed houses, making Celle one of the most remarkable members of the German Timber-Frame Road. From 1378 to 1705, Celle was the official residence of the Lüneburg branch of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg (House of Welf) who had been banished from their original ducal seat by its townsfolk.

The tour is very nice, offering lots of history for lower Saxony and Celle in particular. 7 euros is not a bad price for this self guided tour, however, I feel as though there should be a higher offering of English on some of the artifacts.

We had forgotten how lovely this church is and how linked it is to Great Brtiain with a memorial in it to soldiers who had died during the Napoleonic wars. The decoration and finer pieces such as the Altar and the organ are very ornate and extremely impressive.

For anybody that likes ancient residential architecture and particularly half-timbered houses, coming to Celle must feel like arriving in heaven. We have seen our fair share of picturesque towns in Europe, but Celle must take the crown when it comes to great diversity within uniformity. Relatively few really large buildings but just hundreds and hundreds of beautifully decorated old houses, similar in architectural style and yet so different. The Hoppener Haus is a perfect example, yet just one of the many outstanding places. We were just amazed as we wandered the streets of this city and very highly recommend to visit this place.

Interesting collection displayed on several floors. It can become a bit of a maze but then again the visitor can easily pass from one museum to another, changing the Exhibitions visited. Both buildings are veery interesting from the outside too. One of the best local history museums in the country

I spent two years in Germany, but one of the nicest cities there is Celle, its town shops and gasthouses, and oldy worldly passage into the past is a great day out.
The amazing thing is that Celle was completely untouched by the WWII bombings, and therefore in pristine condition maintained for centuries for all to enjoy - and one of its highlights is the Glockenspiel.
Squeaky clean, great place to go for a walk, grab a beer and check out the Glockenspiel on the hour.
