Dortmund has become a center of high-tech industry, but back in the day, it was one of Germany's first brewing centers, and Dortmunder beer is definitely worth tasting in a local bar. Visit the Reinoldkirche or the Marienkirche, or venture south of town to the ruins of Hohensyburg Castle. December is an especially festive time to visit Dortmund—one of Germany's biggest Christmas markets takes over the center of town.

Right in the heart of the town in a nice square it is the perfect place for a few beers before a game. It clearly caters for the away team as each time I have been it only has away supporters. Brilliant place plenty of choice but you obviously pay tourist prices.

Unique experience as you can create your own meal using the ingredients bar and various sauces. I particularly enjoyed the fresh mangoes in my cocktail (absolutely mango) and the fresh soup and Chile bread served with dinner. Nice flavors and varied ingredients to choose from, even zebra and ostrich meats.

We went with local relatives for a real German dinner. The first thing that caught my eye on the menu was the grilled Schweinshaxe -- one kilogram of pig's foot! I split this and another dish (a mixed platter) with my son. This was a massive overdose of pork but it was very good, with crispy skin and fall-off-the-bone meat. Even though we cut off much of the fat, it was too much for us to finish, and we started out hungry! If my teenage son leaves tasty food on the table, it means something!
Others in the group had a plate with mushrooms that seemed OK but not spectacular. One ordered a burger that turned out to be way-oversized but did not look very interesting.
Nice, convivial ambiance, very German. Prices were slightly higher than ethnic places but still OK.
Would go back, would go for the pig's feet again but make sure to not have eaten previously in a long time.

We wanted traditional German food and our German relatives took us here. The food fulfilled our expectations (plenty of pork, goods-sized portions). They serve Hovel beer, a Dortmund favorite. We were there on a nice August evening and had a table in the first row outside, next to the plaza, very pleasant. Prices were what I expected. The waiter was friendly but service could have been faster.
Overall, I would go back but I liked some other places in Dortmund a bit better.

To visit this restaurant you must have a car because is in the suburbs, we had a friend who took us there and it was a great experience! This is the typical German restaurant he said and it really was unforgettable. The carpaccio was outstanding with a touch of sweet balsamic glaze. My main course was so delicious, it was a filet with cheese on top with cranberries. OMG!!! I had never tried so many different tastes all together. The restaurant seems to have all sorts of different rooms for different activities, we sat at the lovely patio with great weather! Visit this amazing and romantic place!

It was a true surprise for a random evening in Dortmund - everything we ordered for starters was tasting fantastic (dumplings, rice rolls, spicy kimchi soup). When we though we cannot eat anymore, the main arrived - some massive beef dish. I don't know how it was physically possible, but we devoured it all and did not even feel stuffed - such great flavour and tender texture. And the price was very reasonable. Simply amazing, can't wait to have the chance to go there again.

We have been here a number of times since it's opened and have always been amazed at the quality, freshness, and originality of the food. It's a small, cosy and very well designed restaurant. In the summer there are additional tables outside... especially nice to sit outside with one of their special lychee drinks! The service is extra special and they take pride in describing their daily dishes. Regular dishes are found on cards that describe the ingediants with a photo - also available in English. Portions are well sized. Noodles are made fresh daily. I love this place!
