This square transports you back to a former age. It is flanked by churches, one of which is not open and appears to need renovation, and a museum. However, the square is atmospheric and looks over the newer part of the town. Cobbled streets lead off the square and it is very attractive and less visited than other towns. It is a gem.
The only negative aspect of visiting this area was constant harassment from guides (who spoke no English so of no value to us), postcard sellers and car parking "attendants" who look after your car and obviously expect money. The area seemed safe to us and at no other time in Minas Gerais did we experience this. A cold coke and beer at the cafe overlooking the square was a good "pit stop" because it had a verandah and you can watch the world go by! If this town is not on your itinerary, change your itinerary!

Different church, it looks like a modern one, but its constructio of wood and stone makes it different it's not barroque or rococo style,Beautiful

Best for the urban environment! Not only this building to visit but the others around are worth a visit too.

Go and sear anywhere inside. No need to hear the local guides buble talk. Just stare every detail inside-out this incredible church. Notice the porcelain tiles. Check the thickness of the walls. Go behind the altar etc.

We visited Mariana and took the train back to Ouro Preto.
The train is nicely renovated (or new in an old style) and it is definitely a fun way of getting from one place to another and you do get prettier views from the train than from the road.
If you are in Ouro Preto/Mariana during the weekend (fri-sun) and can spare the 40Rs, enjoy the scenery from the train.

So we haven't seen a mine before, for us, we were fascinated. It's huge so you don't feel closterfobic. There are lights inside and some ground water too that makes it quite interesting. The rise to the inside is quite fun too. Be careful of the days you go so there isn't much crowd. We went when there was nobody and it was good to spend some time alone there to see and be amazed, however they do have long lines sometimes and too crowded for comfort even.

O Pelourinho é um marco representativo da história do Brasil, ainda que seja uma página negra difícil de apagar! O Pelourinho está no centro da pequena Praça Minas Gerais. É imponente!
