Breda (Dutch pronunciation: [breːˈdaː] ( listen)) is a city and municipality in the southern part of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant. The name Breda derived from brede Aa ('wide Aa' or 'broad Aa') and refers to the confluence of the rivers Mark and Aa. As a fortified city, the city was of strategic military and political significance. Although a direct Fiefdom of the Holy Roman Emperor, the city obtained a municipal charter; the acquisition of Breda, through marriage, by the House of Nassau ensured that Breda would be at the center of political and social life in the Low Countries. Breda had a population of 183,456 in 2017; the metropolitan area had a population of 324,812. It is part of the Brabantse Stedenrij.

This is a fairly small zoo, restricted to one building of ordinary proportions. But over two levels there is still quite a lot to see. Crocodiles, snakes, leguanos, lizzards, turtles from all parts of the world. And also a preying mantice. The caretakers take out an animal now and then, to feel or observe more closely. Many kids around there, all of whom seem to love it.

We have a view of the church from our hotel room and today we walked to it, went inside just as they were about to have a free Bach recital played on their amazing organ. We felt so privileged to hear it played-it is amazing. We went back later and took more photos-it really is a lovely church-quite austere but beautiful at the same time.

Ginnekenmarkt

Reviewed By Robert937 - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Originally Ginneken (16th century) was just a settlement near the Mark river. Due to the growing importance of Breda its location became more and more unique as a link between outstanding river landscape (Markvalley), forest (Mastbos) and city. The historic village square is a pleasant place to have a coffee or a beer. However do not expect 'village' prices here.
Ginnekenmarkt is only 3 km from the center of Breda.
A visit is easy to combine with a hike through nearby Forests (Mastbos and Ulvenhoutse bos) or cycling along the Mark river to Meersel-Dreef in Belgium.

Various possibilities to consume coffee, tea or lunch, in short, a nice place to explore.

This castle is now the academy for the army and police (gendarmerie), closed to the public except on special occasions. The main building is the Brecht building, which is he oldest stone building in Breda also. Inside you can find paintings from the history of the country and the town.
At the entrance of the building some famous names are curved to the bricks, such as the commander of UN/Dutch troops in Srebrenica (Thomas Karremans). The graduates used to carve their names there, until it was forbidden.
There is a F16 fighter jet on the terrain and also a small chapel.
