We went here both nights of our stay in Skofja Loka. Once for the pizza and once just for drinks (beer and wine). The second visit for drinks, all outside tables were either filled or had reservation cards on them. Asked the owner if we could sit at a reserved table to have only wine and beer until until the patrons arrived. Absolutely! When the patrons arrived, he rearranged things to allow us to stay seated there. Considering we were not eating, I thought it a very nice gesture. First nights pizza was excellent.

This restaurant serves Slovenian food most prepared by the mother of the family. Most of the vegetables come from their own allotment. Service was really good and attentive staff. However, the biggest plus for this establishment is the views. In the summer, eat outside and see the majestic outlook of the valley running across into the Mountains where Slovenia meets Austria. You can also see Kranj and all of the valley villages, especially spectacular as it get dark. The owner spoke limited English but his son spoke English excellently. A group of five had a three course meal and several drinks each for under 140 Euros. Main courses and vegetables are ordered separately. The restaurant has a large indoor eating area and children amusements outside. Large car park on site. Not easy to find unless you have an Eastern European satnav or guidance from a local. As an aside, there are horses stabled below the Terrace (if you are in to that sort of thing!)

It is hard to give real evaluation for this place. From the view of the village Reteče and region between Medvode and Škofja Loka it is the best restaurant. From the view of the Ljubljana it is average. They have perfect food, they have nice personnel. On the other side they don’t have the feeling of something special inside. It is not an old village inn any more and it is not city restaurant yet. You have parking near the main entrance, you have clean interior without important touch of an architect. No fear. Food is really good.

Since renovation quality dropped and prices became higher. Before the renovation in was the place to go in Škofja Loka, but now they became a "fancy" restaurant, local traditional cuisine, once excellent, is now only a pale shadow of itself. Last week I went there and I had to wait a good hour for food. Spare ribbs were dry and overcooked. Only the atmosphere in the restaurant is better than before.

As I am a local in Škofja Loka, I've tried all the Coffeehouses in town, but I have to say that Vahtnca is my favorite spot.
Relaxing atmosphere, very well and modern equiped, very friendly staff ...
One can easily miss the wonderful back garden, as you can not see it from the square, but make a huge mistake as it is the best place to drink coffee in Škofja Loka.
Highly recommended!

Taverna Petra is located just on the edge of Gorenja Vas in the Skofja Loka hills - a beautiful and largely undiscovered part of Slovenia which offers wonderful walks in the summer and a number of smaller ski resorts in winter.
The Taverna is easily spotted above the roadside and is remarkable for the fact that its menu is very large and all freshly prepared to order, offering a superb selection of traditional Slovenian country dishes as well as fresh water fish and seafood.
It is very much a local pub with simple pine decor and you could well be sharing the restaurant with locals playing cards and dominos. Don't let that put you off because the food is very good indeed and the service excellent - so well worth a visit if you are near Skofja Loka, Idrija or Cerkno.
A big plus is that it is open 7 days a week often until the early hours.
