The ferry on Lake Chiemsee is the best way to get to the Islands of Herreninsel and Fraueninsel to see the Herrenchiemsee palace and Benedictine nunnery respectively.
At peak season I believe you can take the ferry from several points around the lake, but we journeyed out from seems to be the most popular point at Prien/Stock Harbour. This also gives you the opportunity to travel to and from the harbour on the Chiemsee Bahn, the cute little steam train that runs mid-May to mid-September from Prien station. Even if you don't travel on the train it is worth seeing it; as trains go it is a real cutie!
The queue for ferry tickets wasn't particularly long (for the middle of the summer), and the journey itself was very smooth across the lake. If you are in the area I would definitely recommend Herreninsel as a place to visit (which means you need to use the ferry) but as it is a very pleasant ride I don't think most people will mind.

I stayed in Prien for a couple months one summer and visited again later with my family. This was a fun time both ways. You can rent a variety of small boats (paddle boats or electric motorboats) for a very reasonable price. It's a great opportunity to get out on the water and even get an up close view of the island and the palace.

If you want a change from the Chiemgau Thermen, Prienavera is the answer. Located right on the lake with views to the Herrenchiemsee and Palace, the facilities for individuals and families are excellent.

I do not really understand the previous english review since it refers to a (probably0 beautiful place ... which has nothing to do with what this page is about.
This page is about a souvenir shop located right next to the tickets selling booth for the Chiemse Ferry.
Since you might have to wait up to 30 minutes for your ferry, visiting this souvenir shop can be a good idea.
They have nice enough articles.
I would have gladly given a 4 star rating however this place is just good and not really "very good"...
a 3.5 star would be the right rating

The Chiemsee-Bahn is a cute little forest green engine and carriages that runs from Prien station to the Prien/Stock Harbour for Ferries across Lake Chiemsee. It usually runs from mid-May to mid-September in peak season, and spends its winters having a little TLC (it is about 130 years old and deserves a bit of down time!)
When we visited Lake Chiemsee we were driving between Salzburg and Munich so it made more sense for us to park nearer the Harbour, but we were excited to see the train when it arrived. I believe there is both a steam train, and a diesel made to look like a steam train so watch out for that little sleight of hand!
When it comes to accessibility I don't think the train is that great unfortunately, mostly because of the age of it. I think access to the platform is limited and the train isn't much better.
If we went back to Lake Chiemsee I think I would definitely like to park further away from the harbour and give the train a try. I think kids would love a trip on the train as well, in fact, who wouldn't love a trip on a bright green steam engine?!

This little beach/park on the Chiemsee is such a relaxing place to be. You can rent Standup Paddleboards, grab a beer or ice cream or go for a fun little dip. This is a great place for families, friends and not super touristy. Just a lovely little beach for some Sunshine and swimming!

Ich konnte mich entspannt zurücklehnen und die traumhafte Landschaft (Berg& See) genießen. Das Team ist super nett. Mit meinem Piloten Jürgen hatte ich einen Glücksgriff.
