Through numerous exhibits and an extensive research library visitors can learn the history of northern Vancouver Island.
The exhibits were outstanding and this was really done with sensitivity. Liked how many First Nations perspectives and quotes were woven through exhibits that weren’t primarily about First Nations peoples but were part of the fabric of life more generally in Campbell River. Given how decimated people were during European conquest it was important to show the continued resilience of the First Nations people despite violent and restrictive policies.

Elk Falls spectacular yesterday with Hydro releasing significant more water. Recommend seeing it now, with this additional water release. Walk is about 1 km to the Falls.

From the start, this place was beautiful. The parking lot was great and there were restrooms at the beginning of the hike. It was a relaxing hike with quite a few stairs near the falls. Once you can hear the roar of the falls, the hike takes on a new excitement because you can't wait to see what's making all of the beautiful white noise!! Everything is extremely clean and well maintained. The suspension bridge is amazing -- at first my ten year old daughter was like, "NO WAY!!"....but then she held Daddy's hand and walked across. Very exciting for all of us. I would highly recommend this to everyone.

There are many awesome wildlife experiences to be had out there, but snorkeling with spawning salmon-- where else are you going to do that? Destiny River Adventures rules this particular excursion and they rock it to the max. It is unique and exciting, but you are so well-outfitted and instructed that you don't have to be an extreme athlete to take part. Heck, kids and grandparents can handle it if they have just a little bit of nerve and can follow directions. My husband and I made two runs, two days apart, one morning, one afternoon and are so glad we did not make it a one-time, been there, done that thing. Both times had different features to offer due to tidal variation, light, etc., plus by the second time you really know what you are doing. ;-) We enjoyed both Jane and Jamie as guides and recommend the company wholeheartedly. It was a thrill to snorkel with the abundant (and huge) salmon, not to mention the trout, sculpin, crayfish and even, as you reach the outlet to the bay, harbor seals.

We have been going into the Ripple Rock trail for over 20 years. It is now much easer with steps and Bridges. We used to crawl up rock faces and wade through water. Now it is a much easer hike. Take a Sandwich and water. We take bread, cheese and wine. Spend some time just sitting and looking down at the passage. The tide change is quite amazing.
This hike requires about two hours and one should be reasonably fit to do it. Good shoes are required however I have seen folk there with flip flops on their feet. There are no cell phone coverage in the area . There are cougars and black bears in the area so travelling in a group of two or more is sensible. We have never seen either in the two decades that we have been doing this trail. It is well travelled hence the absence of animals. However one should be informed.
No guided tour available..

We heard about this hatchery and the possibility there might be black bear hunting for salmon. It's a wonderful place to watch the Salmon. Around noon a large black bear came out of the woods and wandered over to the bridge / gate area where the salmon were collecting. The bear had an easy time of grabbing Salmon. A bit later it showed up on the other side of the gate on the rocks before wandering the trail back down to the river. What an incredible experience seeing this bear so close. The Salmon experience was sweet as well.

The Campbell River Maritime Heritage Centre is home to the historic BCP45 seine fishing boat. The boat was pictured on the Canadian five dollar bill from 1972 to 1986. She was brought to the centre in 2002 and was restored on site by a crew of volunteers. Today visitors can go aboard the BCP45 and explore the galley, bunks, engine room, the head(bathroom) and wheelhouse. In addition to the BCP45 the centre boasts a large collection of marine related artifacts ranging from vintage outboard motors, weapons, navy paraphernalia and navigational instruments to the Margaret M a sailboat built by Arthur Barnes a blind one armed man and so much more. There are also activities for kids, in addition to exploring the boat children can learn to tie nautical knots at the rope board and how to spell their name in flag language. Guided tours are offered from 12-4 and are included with the price of admission. The Maritime Heritage centre is self-funded and support themselves through rentals of various rooms. The centre is also home to the Campbell River Genealogy society. After visiting the Maritime Heritage Centre, many guests also like to take advantage of the free parking and visit the nearby aquarium, the pier and downtown Campbell River.
I brought my Father and family here recently and we all just loved this place. There's an elevator for mobility challenged, although the walkway onto the $5 boat could be more user friendly. But I did get my Dad Frank on board safely and he...MoreWe are so pleased Frank enjoyed the tour. We have several volunteers who donate their time and give tours of the museum. They are invaluable to us and are a wealth of information. Thank you so much for visiting!

We were in need of knowing where the clothing shops were along the street. The young person there gave us a complete review of the shops that would fit our interests and I ended up spending in 2 of them because of it. I could have tried each one, but not all were pertinent to my needs. She saved me a lot of looking and I'd recommend asking if you're short of time!
