The port of Harlingen is a lot about Rederij Doeksen. They rule the waves going to and from the Islands. A lot of people come to Harlingen to catch a ferry to Terschelling or Vlieland. They leave their car in one of the car parks or the garage at the port. Pretty pricey, although not big city pricing. The port itself does not have a lot to offer.

We used their services for one day trip to island Vlieland, booking the tickets directly at the desk in port of Harlingen. Boarding, services on board, cleaness - everything was OK.

This museum occupies the house of a Gin producer during the peak of Holland's commercial and colonial strength. The museum is well laid out, helpful staff and has portable audio guides with location markers. Well done and well worth a visit.

I enjoyed my visit to this colorful art-gallery featuring modern artists from Friesland painting the local landscapes. There is a wide range of affordable paintings. Nearby Stadhuis Harlingen ,also on Noorderhaven, is also worth a look for its impressive architecture.

Rent a boat and discover Harlingen and surrounding, you can sail by your self through the small Canals of Harlingen or go for a 4 hour round trip through small historical towns. this is a very beautiful and great way to spent a day. All of our boats are easy to control and have high quality engines of ~4HP.
We hired a spacious motor boat for 2 hours which was enough time to follow the canal out into the country side through the reed beds where we saw many different birds. The canals were very quiet and easy to navigate. The owner is a real character and was very helpful in taking us through how the outboard worked and providing us with a map and suggesting a route If you've 3 to 4 hours to spare you can do a round trip out of Harlingen via several local villages and back.

Harlingen offers around 7 different churches in its charming historic centre.
The two largest historic churches are the protestant "Grote Kerk Harlingen"dating from 1775 and the Roman Catholic "St Michaelskerk" dating from 1881 by architect Alfred Tepe.
Architect Alfred Tepe worked in Utrecht and a very similar church to this one can be seen at Maarssen near Utrecht.
I found the architecture of the St Michaelskerk very similar to many other 19th century Roman Catholic Churches in the Netherlands.

Very fast transfer from Harlingen to the Dutch island Terschelling and Vlieland. Experience the Waddensea from close. You can also rent the boat for a tour on the Waddensea, a Unesco listed heritage.
