Heage Windmill

Our 18th Century Windmill is the only surviving Six Sailed Stone Built Windmill in the Country! We give visitors an insight into the life of a miller back in the day and how the windmill works. The restored windmill is working again and produces flour that can be bought in the shop on site! We look forward to welcoming you to the windmill soon, and we'd like to take the time to thank you for visiting our TripAdvisor Page

Remember Windy Miller from your childhood TV .....Trumpton? Well you will instantly recognise the sound Heage Windmill makes as the sails turn... ahhh nostaligia!
Heage Windmill is on a prominent hillside, and looks truly stunning.
It would probably take just a 30 minute detour to call in and take a look. They mill flour, and sell it in the little shop. And the millers seem to know plenty about the history and workings.
Well worth a visit.

Belper River Gardens

On a sunny winters day we visited with our (nearly) 2 year old grand daughter. The walk around the Gardens was really enjoyable, though the geese did frighten the grand daughter a little - they were bigger than she was!
The childrens play area was strangely empty, which was great for us.
The cafe still remains a burnt out eyesore after all these years, which is why I only gave it three stars.

Strutt's North Mill

Strutt's North Mill played a vital role in the UK's Industrial Revolution and is of architectural and historic importance. It is one of a chain of mills that form part of UNESCO's Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site. Our knowledgeable guides will take you on a tour of the mill and explain more about its social, historic and industrial background.

The mill building is, typically, enormous, but you won't have to traipse round all of it. The exhibition of machinery, which includes some very early examples of frame knitting machines and lots of others representing the history of cotton spinning and knitting for which Derbyshire's mills became famous is all on one floor.
But below it is the real fascination, where you can see the substructure of one of the earliest iron framed buildings extant. (Ditherington Flax Mill is older, but you can't yet visit the inside of it I gather.) The slender cast-iron columns support transverse beams also of iron, which in turn bear shallow brick vaults, made apparently not of solid bricks, but of terracotta pots unsurprisingly christened 'flower-pots'. These make the whole thing much lighter than conventional brickwork would have been. A model and some specimen pots (all hand-thrown by the thousand) show how this was achieved.
The whole tour is not long, but was expertly conducted by a very knowledgable and enthusiastic guide.

Visited here today on a very wet day with a friend and her granddaughter who is nearly two, who have just moved to the area.
Initially all was fine, the set-up and play equipment are very good. It has a cafe on site too which is handy. However we have left feeling stunned and somewhat offended - the reason being because even though we had spent just under £20 on food and drink we were approached and told that the drink my friend’s granddaughter was drinking had to be put away as they didn’t sell it. We tried to explain that this is the only drink she can have and she needed a drink with her lunch and we would have purchased it if we could, but all fell on deaf ears.
Also really surprised that there isn’t a dedicated baby changing facility when the place is full of children in nappies. Others I’ve been to have had ones with potties and baby wipes.
We won’t be back, we will explore the other play centres nearby, which is a shame as her 2nd birthday is fast approaching and we could have had her party here.

St Peter's Church

Reviewed By johnhp702 - Derby, United Kingdom

The foundation stone for St Peter's was laid in 1822 and the church opened in 1824, however it was not until 1846 that the Parish of St Peter's Belper was formed. From the outside it looks like any other church but enter and you will be surprised at the contemporary interior. The churchyard contains over 100 mainly Victorian grave sites but this was closed in 1856 to any new grave plots.

White Wardrobe

Reviewed By thefoosfan

Came here with the wife in July, absolutely stunning range of Joules, Braintree, White Stuff and Brake burn.
One thing I noticed is that there are Boutiques littered all over Belper, however this is the only one apart from Blue Water and the Mill which actually stocks brands.
My wife doesn't normally like getting changed in places like this but the member of staff made her feel comfortable and even selected an outfit that boosted confidence.
Will definitely be visiting again.
