Cobblestones Museum is located in Greytown on the site of the original Hastwell stables built in 1866. From here horse drawn coaches departed for Wellington and other Wairarapa towns. The new Entrance & Exhibition Building acts as an introduction to the museum and village and showcases a number of our larger and significant objects in our collection. The new exhibition building tells some of Greytown’s and Wairarapa heritage stories within it, and provides a link to other displays at Cobblestones and the region’s wider history. We also show the strong links to Papawai Marae and the exhibition features two river waka both of which were recovered from farmlands in the South Wairarapa. Within Cobblestone’s attractive village setting visitors can discover a range of historic buildings, giving an insight into life as it was lived by the Wairarapa’s first European settlers.
Greytown is charming town on the road north of Wellington. One could do a day trip but we were driving through on our way to Napier and saw this museum. It's cleverly constructed of historic buildings from the area that have been bought in and reconstructed on the site - a school, hospital, stable, cottage etc etc. Very pleasant to wander around the grounds and absorb the history.

Although the chocolatier here thinks chocolate should be savoury, I forgive him as the chocolates he creates are divine - I even tried and bought the sea salt version!. Beautiful little chocolate animals made a great take home gift for my children too.

Spent a most enjoyable couple of days cycling the Greytown to Woodside rail trail. This cycleway passes along a superb path bounded by lush pastureland and mature stands of trees. This route has a most interesting early railway history. The trail passes over babbling brooks and terminates at the Woodside station which is a stop off for commuter trains travelling between Masterton and Wellington. The local area is strongly reminiscent of English countryside. The rail trail makes a short easy and totally relaxing going ride.

Owned by the same family for 3 generations, the farm has down-sized to 40 acres. This and the large garden still keeps owners, Neil & Greg Montgomerie-Crowe busy! Excess produce from the vegetable garden and fruit trees are made into jams and chutneys. Walnuts and hazelnuts are also sold at the Gardens. Friendly animals are a favourite with visitors - both adults and children! Garden & Farm Tour - Minimum of 8 people required $20 per Adult and $10 per Child [under 10 years] OR Garden & Farm Tour - Less than 8 people $25 per adult and $10 per Child [under 10 years] with a minimum charge of $100. Tours for smaller groups are subject to availability.
Well worth a visit, for all ages, large grounds to wander through, maybe out of way but well worth visiting. full of history as the land was once belonging to the Cotter family. Pierce Cotter. View by appointment dont be put off by that.. nice to meet the owners.. loved the Gardens. Went with a large group. The garden is featured in www,wairarapaheritageattractions.org.nz or Wairarapa Heritage brochures. which list all of Wairarapa places to visit, museums etc. rather leave the photograph to the owner to choose one thanks.

We operate a day tour out of Wellington to Greytown, a country village with cosmopolitan style. We meet the train from Wellington at Woodside, near Greytown where we transfer our customers to beautiful Greytown. They will enjoy boutique shopping, lunch, food tasting and a vineyard tasting experience in Martinborough wine region. Customers are returned for the train to Wellington.
Caught the train at Wellington (no hassles) and enjoyed the trip to Woodside where we were met by Graham the very jovial and friendly tour guide. Started with a goodie bag and then toured through Greytown. A good mix of exploring on your own vs...MoreThank you for your review Phil. We appreciate that you enjoyed your tour. We feel that we are able to offer a varied day that has something for everybody. I hope our paths cross again soon.
