The 10 Best Things to Do in Zermatt, Switzerland

October 15, 2017 Rosalyn Ihle

When most people think of Zermatt, they think of one thing: The Matterhorn. This ultimate Swiss icon looms over Zermatt, first drawing visitors here in the 1860s. The village of Zermatt itself is lovely and car-free, with old-fashioned brown chalets and winding alleys. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to walk everywhere—there are electric vehicles and horse-drawn cabs.) Skiing in the region often lasts through early summer, but when the weather’s warmer, it’s a great time to hike.

We have just returned from a week in Zermatt,Switzerland,we were holidaying as a large group with our two girls, age 15 yrs and 5yrs who we arranged to have ski lessons for 3 hours every morning, both our daughters had experienced dry slope skiing back home in the UK but were placed in a beginners class as it was their first time skiing on snow.
Martha our 5 year old was in Emma's group and I have to say we couldn't of wished for a better ski instructor to teach Martha,Emma always greeted her with a friendly and reassuring attitude and off Martha went, she didn't even look back, she couldn't wait to join her group of similar ages and ability.
We would often spot Martha whilst travelling above the Wolli Park on the chairlift and call out,she always would wave back at us and looked like she was having lots of fun.
Having fun was important to us as parents because being so young we didn't want Martha to have an unhappy experience(as I did as an 8 year old with an Austrian instructor who spoke no English and who took the lesson as if it was a chore to ski) time has moved on thankfully!
Emma made Martha look forward to her lesson each morning, they practised on a tiny ramp/jump,they negotiated around posts and by the end of the week Martha's confidence was "sky high". She also enjoyed the morning break for a cup of the delicious Caotina hot chocolate. From talking to Martha about her lessons she said how Emma was always so kind if she fell over or had a problem with the 'magic carpet' (the lift to get them back up to the top of the slope) There seemed to be lots of 'high fives' and team Em and Em's was born and seemed most defiantly the team to be in!...
Martha was actually quite sad when her lessons came to an end and would love Emma to teach her again should we be fortunate to return in 2019.
Overall I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Emma especially if you have a young child, she is so good with children almost as if she has children of her own,she just gets them! Means so much because then you can leave your child whilst you go off and ski with the added confidence that they are in very safe hands.
Thank you Emma once again, you are a credit to ES Zermatt.
The Fry family.

Gornergrat

The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain Panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. From there you can ski down or by sledge or just return by train. A must when you visiting Zermatt!

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

The highest cable car station in Europe (3,883 m), with its new restaurant, sets fresh standards in sustainable development. The views of the highest Mountains in Italy, France and Switzerland are breathtaking. The ski area on the Theodul Glacier is open 365 days a year. Matterhorn glacier paradise – a world of adventures. From here, mountaineers and hikers accompanied by mountain guides set off to scale the Breithorn (4,164 m), a 2.5-hour climb up the perennial snows; for many hikers, this is their first ascent of a 4,000-metre peak. On some days, the views from the observation platform are so clear they seem to stretch as far as the Mediterranean. Mont Blanc (4,810 m) in France, the highest mountain in the Alps, towers above its neighbours; the summit of the Gran Paradiso (4,061 m), Italy’s highest peak, is often also visible. The air up here is thin, so visitors should take plenty of time to explore. This is also the summit of the international ski area, open 365 days a year, and the gateway to Europe’s largest summer ski area. The Matterhorn from a fresh angle Up here, right by the Italian border, visitors see a very different side of the Matterhorn. This comes as a surprise: the view is very different to the one from the Gornergrat or the Rothorn, it’s as if the Matterhorn has acquired a new look. In fact this vantage point offers the finest view of the mountain’s south face. Summer training for national ski teams Anyone seeking the autograph of an international ski star has the best chances of success up at Matterhorn glacier paradise. In summer, nearly all the world’s national ski teams train for the speed disciplines up on the glacier, and all the athletes have to pass through the summit station to access the summer pistes. All year: •Audio system on the ride to the summit with information about the alpine world, the cog railway and much more •Observation platform with summit cross, photo point and information panel on the mountain Panorama •Inside the mountain: observation window looking out over the Breithorn •Cinema Lounge •Restaurant with shop •Matterhorn glacier paradise lodge with accommodation •Meeting room •Glacier palace, the highest in Europe •Direct access to the ski pistes (365 days a year, including on the Theodul Glacier) •Ski pistes linked to Italy (both winter and summer) •Photo subjects: Matterhorn, Breithorn, Weisshorn and other celebrity Mountains •InfoCube - 3S Bahn Summer: •Summer ski area, 21 km of piste •Snow Park Zermatt at the Plateau Rosa •Snowtubing

Many people ascend to the highest point of Matterhorn Glacier Paradise by gondola, and then continue on to the Italian side of the mountain. Keep in mind that time flies and some lifts close early, especially in cases of bad weather or high wind- and you can get stuck in Italy for the night without a hotel reservation. While this did not happen to us, we heard it from enough people to realize it’s not an uncommon problem.
Another tip: it is quick and easy to buy lift passes at kiosks everywhere, and there is very little discount for a second day of skiing. So if you have any doubts that you will really ski a second day, don’t but the second day until the morning of the second day. You really don’t save time, or much money. Same with ski rentals. Rent for one day, and extend if you need to. They will usually honor a lower price for multi day rentals even if you don’t promise in advance. Ask to make sure; and they’ll tell you.
We had bad weather the second day and therefore saved a fortune ($185 per person) by only buying one day of rental and lift pass instead of the two we planned.

This is a huge resort that encompasses several previously separate ski areas, some of which are in Italy. Trails are a little less clearly marked than American ski resorts and the difficulty coloring system is also different, with blue denoting esay, red intermediate, and black difficult. There are virtually no black trails, and also almost no moguls. Moguls seem to be an American thing.
Also there are several gondolas, which are very nice and smooth, and the gondolas have intermediate stops so that you can go all the way from bottom to top in a gondola.
One day, whole resort (international) lift tickets were 92 CHF, which was 10 CHF more than non-international. Rental for basic boots skis and poles was 70 CHF for one day.

Rothorn

The best view of the Matterhorn The Rothorn is easily reached from Sunnegga in just 15 minutes. From here, you can see the Matterhorn from its most photogenic side. An added attraction is that you see all 38 four-thousandmetre peaks that surround Zermatt. We recommend: It is worth to get up early and enjoy the magnificent view at sunrise! A special item of interest up here is the themed hiking trail “Peak Collection” around the restaurant Rothorn. This special outdoor exhibition of 18 sculptures will connect you on an artistic level with the Alpine world of Zermatt and its many tales. Zermatt’s most beautiful mountain lake The Stellisee lake at 2,537 metres (8,323 ft) is the most-photographed lake in Zermatt. For sure, you have already marvelled yourself at a photo of the Stellisee, capturing the fascinating reflection of the Matterhorn. From Blauherd, you can reach the idyllic Stellisee in about 20 minutes. The famous flower trail also starts at Blauherd. This unique hike offers an unparalleled diversity of flowering plants. Your excursion can be ideally combined with a break at Stellisee lake or the sunrise ride.

Like the other major attractions in Zermatt- Gonegrat and Glacier Paradise, Rothorn boasts it's fair share of spectacular vistas and beautiful scenery of the Swiss Alps. In my opinion, the highlight was Stellisee near the Blauherd stop. We were lucky to encounter calm weather and that allowed us to enjoy the famous mirror image of the Matterhorn on the lake.
Do the hike to Stellisee in the morning for the best lighting for photography.

Kickbiking on Sunnegga The extremely popular kickbikes can be hired at the SunneggaRothorn valley station (helmet included). From there it’s a thrill a minute as you speed downhill to Tuftern and on to Zermatt. There are various restaurants along the way where you can stop for a breather before continuing back to the valley station to return your kickbikes.

Great stop off point before ascending to higher peaks of Rosthorn and Blaugarde. Lovely lunch here and hot choc. Lots of skiers stop off here so avoid 1-2pm it’s lunchtime there especially for the skiers early lunch or late is recommended. Tip: if you’re not sure of altitude make sure you sip water ascending and eat light bite like salad or soup this cuts down the feeling of nausea.

Breithorn

The Breithorn (4,164 m), with its many summits, is a strong, glaciered mountain crest. The normal climb is considered as one of the easiest routes for climbing a four-thousand metre mountain. This tour is a perfect way to get a sense of high Alpine air for the first time but only for surefooted and experienced mountain hikers accompanied by a mountain guide. The tour includes climbing a glaciated four thousand-metre peak, and this is not to be underestimated. In the early morning, one takes the aerial tramway to Matterhorn glacier paradise at 3,883 m. The climb to the top and the descent afterwards lasts about three hours depending on the conditions. Even though the climb is not dizzying, the tour does offer a high Alpine mountain experience where one can live out the feeling of having one’s head already in outer space. •Snow tour on the glacier •The overall difficulty of the tour is given as “L” (easy) •A mountain guide is recommended •Warning: glacier crevasses

Reviewed By botmi - Markham, Canada

Not for everybody, but if you are in a decent shape, I highly recommended. It is not easy, the high altitude will make this climb difficult, but it is definitely worth it. The views are spectacular and the sense of accomplishment of such is a peak it is something to look forward to.
Make sure you have a guide, unless you know what you are doing, and that you are using the proper equipment (can be rented down in Zermatt).

Matterhorn Museum - Zermatlantis

The Matterhorn Museum – Zermatlantis offers insight into the development of Zermatt. It shows the triumph and tragedy surrounding the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Here one is immersed in the mountain world of past generations: One sees how the people lived in Zermatt in the 19th century and shudder at the sight of the broken rope from the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Four of the seven climbers lost their lives at that time. And one looks in wonder at “Theo,” the 16th century mercenary who did not succeed in crossing the Theodul Pass.

The Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt is a cultural-natural museum whose main theme is the Matterhorn.
The museum is in the form of a reconstituted mountain village consisting of 14 houses (church, hotel, huts and granaries), and relates the history and development of tourism in the Zermatt area, including the story of the first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper and party.
The museum displays one of the two stones that Claude Nicollier took from the summit and brought with him on the Space Shuttle Endeavour STS-61 Mission in 1993. The other stone was put back on the summit.
