The Museum is housed in the old Rooftile and Brickworks Factory of Nikolaos and Spyridon Tsalapatas, in Volos (Thessaly). It presents daily life in the factory, as well as all the production stages of different types of bricks and tiles. Its objective is to showcase the historical identity of the town of Volos and to contribute to the preservation and promotion of its industrial heritage. The N. & S. We were unfortunate not to have fine weather for our stay in Makrinitsa, but explored the winding lanes nonetheless. One of them led us to this wonderful cafe. Each of the small rooms is a museum into itself, with many paintings and works of art displayed for sale. Sat and enjoyed recorded Greek music and shared a mouth-watering piece of chocolate torte, accompanied by cappuccino. Just perfect.

On an early morning walk around the streets of Portaria, we came across this tiny monastery, with a candle burning outside, which I simply had to enter. How a simple one-roomed ancient religious building can give such a profound feeling of peace and history, I know not - but that's how I felt once I stepped over the stone step marking the entrance to the cool interior. The ancient frescos, only partially restored, add to the feeling and, though I can't tell you much about the history of this special place, I would certainly suggest that, if you're passing, you take a few minutes to light a candle here and feel the peace that surrounds you.

The name of this old district of Volos is actually meaning "Old [district]". It is filled nowadays with pubs, bars and restaurants of all kinds, with music or not. It is also interesting for a day visit, as it hosts some nice "tsipouradika" (tsipouro or otherwise a type of ouzo places) which serve along with it sea-meze (tapas). One of the best there is "Kerasia". During the day you may also browse all kinds of old type shops (novelties, haberdasher mainly). For the night, a nice steak tavern is "Brizoladiko", but you may try the other restaurants around as well. Try kavourma and soutzouk and finish the night with a bar crawl in the area.
