Mirador del Cristo de la Misericordia

I walked from our lodging, Casa Andalucia, down to the beach, forded the river at the mouth, went along the beach and then took the next road up for one block, and then turned left. From there the route is well-signed. It took about 45 minutes from our hostel. It cost $1 to enter. I arrived just before 5 p.m. and stayed until after sunset. I was the last one there. Great for photos! Although it is very windy. By the time I walked down it was quite dark, but he walk back along the beach was beautiful.

Pie de Gigante Spanish School

Pie de Gigante Spanish School offers spanish clases for all levels. The school is located in Playa Gigante, a small fishing and surf village in Nicaragua. We offer classes individually, in groups, and online. Classes are customised to the individual students needs. Homestays are perfect for full immersion and can also be arranged by the school.

My boyfriend and I are beginners and took classes together for almost 2 weeks here and we were extremely impressed by the school and its teachers. Grethel, our instructor, was patient, empathetic and so fun to spend 3 hours of the day with! We learned a great deal from her. The first 1-1.5 hours was conversation, and the remaining of the class we did grammar lessons or played games in Spanish which focused on vocab. Additionally, sometimes all the teachers and students would get together to play a game todo en español!
We loved this place so much that we encouraged our friends to also take 3 days of lessons here, and even in their short time they said it was totally worth it. I also plan to bring my sister back here when she visits (she majored in Spanish and I've heard advanced speakers rave about this place too).
If you want a Spanish school that has enthusiastic teachers, killer views of the beach, and even great coffee to keep you energized (only 20 cords!) then go here. The principal, Juan, was also very accommodating to our needs because we requested to do a homestay last minute and he made it happen. I have no complaints about this place, except maybe the cute gatito who would hang around during our lessons but wouldn't let me pet her :P
We did another Spanish school in León, but we thought Pie de Gigante was much better AND it cost about 1/3 less. Playa Gigante itself is such a unique little town and I would encourage anyone who wants more of an "off the beaten path" experience to check it out.

Surf Popoyo Lessons

Hi, my name is Morrie. I'm a kiwi now living the dream in Nicaragua. I own and operate Surf Popoyo Lessons. I would love to teach you how to surf. I offer 3 hour lessons to beginner and beginner/intermediate surfers. My lessons tend to have around an hour of class time where we learn about rips, waves and ocean safety. We then create some muscle memory, practicing standing up. After that, it's off to the water to put it all into practice and stand up on some waves. I provide a lot of information about the steps to take following the lesson to turn yourself into a competent surfer. I only charge you USD$40, for a group class. Private classes are $70. So, what do you have to loose...? Come Down to Casa Rosada and say hi. Don't just go Surfing, become a surfer. It will change your life!

Morrie is truly passionate and knows how to share his passion, from his knowledge of the ocean to the technique on how to stand on the board and stay on the board;)
The first session is very complete and ideal for beginners. We were so happy that we had 2 other sessions afterward and it was again full of very good advice to help us progress. What we also appreciated is that he so didn't push for us to take more lessons and actually advised us to also go on our own while always giving us advice on how/where/when.

We had a great 4 hour fishing trip with six children and 4 adults. The boat was impeccably clean with very friendly staff. All of us fished and in total we caught 10 fish, 8 Mahi Mahis and two tunas! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us, even the youngest of the children who is 7.
The ocean in Nicaragua is beautiful and the perfect ending was fresh oysters and delicious sushi! Highly recomended for an overall great experience!

I've never had a Thai massage before and it would be accurate to suggest that it wasn't the most gentle or soothing of massages but just ninety minutes worked my body such that would have taken much longer with other techniques. Alex instinctively narrows in on parts of your body containing tension you didn't even know was there. I walked lighter after my session. See ya' next year Alex!

Course was in good condition for being in the dry season. Cheap rates too! Rental clubs were Ping irons and Taylor Made woods! Pleasantly surprised with that. Some constriction on the course but not impactful. A few beautiful holes as well, very elevated....you can see forever!

Yahaira, runs an amazing operation.
The teachers, activities and the home stay all ran super smooth. Actually my favorite part of my 3 week vacation was staying and knowing Lucilia from my home stay. She was so sincere and kind. With the one on one lessons and being forced to only speak in spanish you will improve your skills rapidly.
The school was professionally operated but they still made you feel like Family!!!
Thanks Spanish Ya
and special thanks to Yahaira, Claudia, and Lucilia!!

Traveled to Nicaragua for a surf trip and found Bordport. You select your surfboard online and they meet you at the airport (or your hotel) to drop off and pick up the boards.
Boards are extremely high quality and geared towards performance Surfing. They were brand new when we rented. Price is $250 per week, but this beats the $200/way fees that most airlines are charging. And you also don't have to lug your boards around.
Service was extremely friendly and helpful. Carlos promptly met us at the airport for both pick-up and drop-off and was easy to communicate with via Whatsapp.
I would definitely utilize Bordport for future surf trips and highly recommended them to anyone looking for premium surfboard rentals in Nicaragua.

Arrived to this school with very limited Spanish knowledge. My teacher was Vanessa, and she was amazing! She was extremely professional, but she had a wonderful sense of humour, as all of the teachers at this school had. A very comfortable school setting with one on one instruction, located in the centre of the town, with wifi. I studied here 4 hrs a day for 6 days, and the time passed far to quickly. A plan for my week was made at the start, and reviewed each day. I was in Nicaragua for a dental brigade in the northern part of the country, and Vanessa made sure I had the correct terminology for the patients I would be interacting with. I was invited to join the teachers for a cultural dance presentation, salsa dancing , and Spanish Karaoke. I had a wonderful time with them outside of the class room, as I did in class!
I stayed with a beautiful Nicaraguan family, that were very considerate of me, and my needs. The house was on the main drag of SJD, a little noisy with traffic, vehicles, roasters, and Barking dogs, but that is the experience of living with a host family, and having the cultural experience. Each evening I was encouraged to talk with the family, and was served outstanding meals. I was given homework at the end of each class, which was a great review, and prepared me for the following day. I can't say enough about this school, the teachers, and my home stay! I would highly recommend LASS to anyone looking for a spanish school in San Juan del Sur! I hope to visit again Hasta Pronto!
