Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspensky Sobor)

Reviewed By Frickelbude - Dusseldorf, Germany

Well churches and cathedrals are landmarks of every Russian city, and this one is definitely the nicest and biggest in Smolensk.
Some may say - see one and you've seen them all... May be - but this one, although "same", manages to still pose a difference... Situated on a hill above the wall part lining the river, from its place a view to the walls (where you must go too, if only to just look back) is very worth stopping for and snapping a photo.
And the Cathedral and its stairs still look a bit different from the average worship place, maybe because of the slightly different architecture..
Be prepared that as with all in Smolensk, this one is still being repaired...

I visited here in peak winter season but the experience is different. Natural ponds turn into ice rinks with children skating and opera sets playing in the background . It's like a dream walking around this place. Must visit !

Smolensk Fortress

Reviewed By Abrakadaber - Riga

The fortress is surrounding the whole central part of Smolensk and is a must-see. It has survived until now only partly, but still looks very impressive. There is a good museum in Gromovaya Tower. But if you go to the Eastern part towards Oryol (Eagle) Tower, there is a possibility to climb to the fortress and to walk along its walls. Unfortunately that part is distant from the centre and is not well maintained.

Sculpture Deer

Reviewed By Frickelbude - Dusseldorf, Germany

The title says it - this sculpture is brought from Germany, and installed in the Glinka PKIO in the Smolensk center. Higher than a human, it is not easily climbable, but this is not worth anyway if you do not want to be fined :) Still, a nice stop for a photo of it, and of the two small lion sculptures which guard the Deer...
Cannot help it - I was recently in Stuttgart, and this statue really looks similar to the deer on the coat of arms of Stuttgart...
But your kid will probably love it :)

Art Gallery at the Smolensk State Museum Reserve

Reviewed By Evesmyth - Kiev, Ukraine

Wonderful paintings and sculptures--the museum seems to go on forever with several floors of paintings. It's extraordinary. The pieces from the Soviet period were fantastic. Be prepared to cover your shoes with plastic to protect the wood floors and give your bags to the cloak check. They don't allow backpacks or large purses into the exhibit.

Excellent museum charting the history of Smolensk and its battles since the creation of the fortress. Located in one of the fortress towers with the chance to go out on a viewing platform and up to the top of the tower. Warning - lots of steps! Great detail, clearly explained. Lots of historical objects and costumes and a superb town model. Has to be seen.
