Stefan's Wine and Christmas Paradise Stefan opened his shop, in St. Goar in the middle of the World heritage `Mittelrhein`, over 20 years ago. He is offering delecius Wines and Brandys made from his family. The first and still the most famous Brandy Stefan's family is producing is the peach Brandy. Made out of red peaches which are growing in the vineyards. Whenever you are entering the shop you will be offered a taste of it.: Be careful this Brandy make costumers return from all over the world. Today the variety of Stefan's Brandys got much bigger. The Menu offers something for every taste: from the famous peach Brandy to Blackberry Brandy, from different chocolate Brandys to winter apple brandy even a whisky or a cognac. And not to forget the Queen of the German wines 'Eiswein'. You will find this seldom wine as well in Stefan's shop. Eiswein must be produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugar and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing a more concentrated grape. With Eiswein, the freezing happens before the fermentation, not afterwards. Only healthy grapes keep in good shape until the opportunity arises for an Eiswein harvest, which in extreme cases can occur after the New Year, on a northern hemisphere calendar. This gives Eiswein its characteristic refreshing sweetness balanced by high acidity. Eiswein production is risky (the frost may not come at all before the grapes rot or are otherwise lost) and requires the availability of a large enough labor force to pick the whole crop within a few hours, at a moment's notice, on the first morning that is cold enough. This results in relatively small amounts of Eiswein being made world-wide, making Eiswein generally quite expensive. You have some time in St. Goar come in and enjoy a free wine and Brandy tasting. Or enjoy your time browsing through the Christmas shop. You are visiting St. Goar with a group, no problem give a call and we set up a tasting with some snacks for you. Or what do you think of a free tasting at your home? And don't worry when your bottles get empty you can always order online and we ship it directly to your home. And of course we will reimburse your shipping as well when you order online.
Stefan is the best shopkeeper/friend you can have in St. Goar. Also say hello to his son - Joe - if he isn't working at his other labors.
Friendly atmosphere, great product selection, and amazing people. Also we received our shipment of souvenirs 8 days after we returned (18 days after visiting ).
Stefan's Wine Paradise is worth a detour.

A lot of fences and construction mars the scenery these days. Paid parking. Mediocre restaurants on site. The view is nice but I liked others better, like the free one overlooking Bacharach just down the road. But that took some finding up windy dirt roads, whereas Loreley is clearly marked. So I guess it's Ok for a quick visit.

While on our Vantage River Cruise, we sailed past this castle on the Rhine River that sits high above the medieval town of Oberwesel. From our vantage point we definitely had a great view of this castle and I had to find out a bit more about it.
Like many of the Castles along the Rhine River, this castle is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The history of the castle dates back to sometime between 911 and 1166 but was burned down in 1689 by french soldiers. After 200 years it was bought and restored by a family and after another change of ownership in 1957, it has been a hotel and restaurant.

While on our Vantage River Cruise, we sailed by this castle that actually sits on an island on the Rhine River. From our vantage point we definitely had a great view of this castle. It dates back to about 1327 and was built for the purpose of collecting tolls. It certainly is very unique.

The views are well worth the effort of the walk. It is open from 7am to 10pm for drinks and food although it is really a youth hostel so do not be surprised if the peace is shattered by a group of children coming or going! Vista is superb. Just past the entrance to the Burg is another viewing platform, a must as well.

The Castle is well worth a visit. Just make shore you have good footwear on as it is uneven inside. You can get good views from here over the river.

The Loreley Linie runs mainly between Boppard, St Goar and theLoreley Rock although there are some longer cruises. It is a very pleasant experience with good commentary and interesting sights along the journey. Food and drink is available on board at reasonable prices. Recommended if you do not want too long a sail, about 1-1 and 1/2 hours depending on direction of travel. upstream is always a bit longer. Can be busy with large groups. Arrive early for the best seats

This little church holds a museum's worth of religious marvels. Chief of these is the gilded altarpiece with its many marvelously carved statues in the main aisle. I belive it on UNESCO's list of human patrimony. The side altars also contain beatiful triptychs and ornate tombstones in high relief. The frescoes originally painted on the walls and columns have been carefully restored, in addition to two relatively recent (18th-19th century) wooden statues inlaid with mussel shells and mother-of-pearl. Architecturally, the church is noted for having a rood-screen and baldachin, as well as lovely carved wooden pews for the congregation.
Worth a detour.
