Great Wall at Shanhaiguan Pass (Zhendong Gate)

This is an important and famous section of The Great Wall originally built in 583 AM that played a significant role in the military defense of the Ming Dynasty. Shanhaiguan Pass is located in the small harbor town of Qinhuangdao by the Sea.

Newly reconstructed, this section of the wall is one of many you can visit around Qinhuangdao. I preferred the original section about an hour out of the city, but this is best for easy visiting. Impressive in scale and organization, there are also buildings open with displays of weapons and armor. It is a good walk around, and it offers plenty of good views up into the hills to see the towers still in place higher up. The area around the entrance is of course very touristy and filled with vendors, but the wall itself is very good.

Replicated wall so nothing historical to see, one side is a beach with tacky burger bar etc. & the other a massively ugly port! We went out of season which I recommend as the beach was empty and therefore clean, & v few people around. On a cold day, with blue skies it makes a nice walk when coupled with the city walls back in town.
Surprisingly good loo's in the ticket office too!

Qinghuang Island Wildlife park

Lots of animals. Most of them you can feed or touch for a price (10-20Y). For the same price you can take a picture with animals or feed them. Most animals have space to roam around. Drive through or take a train through with places to get off. The animal show was heartbreaking. The coyote and some other animals had broken spirits and hated doing their "tricks". The only ones that seemed to enjoy performing were the dogs. Lots of places to eat (mostly junk food). There is a reasonable restaurant where the rides are. If you like zoos, you will like this place. If you love animals, don't go. Save up and go on safari in Africa.
TIP: Your kids will want to feed the animals. Bring veggies (carrots, cucumbers, etc. for the rabbits, kangaroos, etc. and leafy veggies for other animals such as giraffes). Save money and don't buy animal food there.
TIP: Go off season when there are fewer people. The animals are still there but less crowds.

Shanhaiguan Gate Tower

To get here from the Shanhaiguan Railway Station, just walk straight down the road exiting the station. You'll be walking North and should see a wall at the end of the street. Once you get to the wall, turn right and walk until you get to the entrance. Maybe about a ten minute walk total. Not much of the wall was open when I visited so they wouldn't let me buy the combo ticket for 120 yuan. I paid 40 yuan to visit the wall and walk around the enclosed old city area.
This site was just "okay" and that's coming from a history lover. When I was there not much of the wall was open to walk on. This section isn't really impressive if you've been to other parts of the Great Wall. There are several exhibits inside the buildings that were interesting to see. The site overall was very touristy. If pressed for time, I'd recommend visiting the Laulongtou or Jiumenkou.

This section of the Great Wall of China requires some stamina - there are lots of steps (the difference is height of the steps varies - some quite small and others, uncomfortably larger). There is a chairlift which can be used as an alternative to climbing up to the Wall. The every-changing view as you climb is amazing, as you see the Wall winding across the Mountains (even on a smoggy day, you can appreciate the scale and grandeur of the Wall). A large section of the Wall has been maintained and is in good condition, but care is required as it is very steep in places.

There should be less expectations for this beach. It cannot be compared with the Beaches of many countries. However, it is nice for this area. Sand is especially good. Sea is not so impressive. Organisation of government at the seaside is very good

I enjoyed this part of BeiDaHe in Qinhuangdao. Lots of great photo opportunities, beautiful flowers and clean sea air. A nice place for a stroll or a calm place to sit and soak it all up.

A definite must visit if you are interested in the history of the Great Wall! It's free and visit it only after you went to the First Pass Under Heaven as you will not be able to get into the First Pass Under Heaven after you exited. From there you can follow the road out and take a taxi or those small 3-wheeled electric car (taxi could be rare so this car, although slower makes a good alternative! and I paid only 10RMB to get to Laolongtou) to Laolongtou

This attraction is made for kids-6-12 years old. May not be safe for younger kids and older kids will think it's juvenile. The park has lots of interesting things to see-a long slide, swings, water games, etc. the house is mostly stuff like windows set sideways, mirrors, strange passageways, etc. Worth a trip if you are already in Qinhunagdao. Cost is 25Y in season. There is a very interesting Russian church next door. Not a good place for wheelchairs or strollers.
