The arch was built just after the first century AD and is in remarkable condition. Every surface of the arch is carved/sculpted in great detail! Beautiful!

I always visit Santa Sofia when I go to Benevento ... it oozes pure early Christian spirit. Indeed it was founded by Arechis II of Benevento, a Lombard, around 760 and has managed to conserve a strange purity of spirit (I don't know how else to describe it) inpite of the various restorations through the ages. A tiny jewel left by the northern Lombards in this southern fastness

The torre has wonderful views over the valley and across to the Monte Taburna. Inside is a magnificent 2500 year old vase immaculately preserved and dramatically presented. And the visit is free! It's worth the battle with the twisty and badly signposted local roads (sat nav indispensable) because you're unlikely to see anything from antiquity as mind-blowing as this for a long time. It really will take your breath away! The story of its discovery and eventual return to Montesarchio is fascinating, although you'll need some Italian as the guides' English is limited. Go to the archeological museum afterwards (also free) and then use the money you'd expect to pay in entrance fees for a delicious and authentically regional meal at the ristorante Colle d'Ercole nearby.

This small church that was the chapel of the castle built by Count Roberto the Norman between 1102 and 1107 is a small jewel. It is divided into 3 naves with a double series of 5 columns and has a pavement of mosaics that echo paleochristian churches of the VI to VII centuries. Absolutely breathtaking to see such a unique building still standing and used for its original function after 900 years.

Benevento is one of the oldest, ongoing towns in Italy and Europe. An important city in antiquity it flourished due to its fortunate position on the Appian way connecting it to Rome. It has been honoured by several emperors and was an important and independent principality in the middle ages, before succumbing to the authority of the Papal states and then Italy. So a place with such a rich history has some important things to offers for lovers of history.
The old town boats the best preserved triumphal arch (The Arch of Trajan) and houses important churches (Saint Sophia stans out) and monasteries. The walk around town will take you no more than an hour. You can also visit the Amphitheatre and the larger archaeological sites if that is of interest. Not a very long visit. The city is 50 minutes drive for Naples. Highly recommend it as a visit destination, en route to somewhere else.

Sant'agata Dé Goti, Province of Benevento, Italy. An old town on a hill top north of Napoli. Striking view from the outside. The duomo inside dates back to the 11th century. Nice and quiet town. Not spoiled by visitors. There are nice restaurants and places to stay in the town. It is a good detour/stop-over.
