Fort Of The Hooded Cobra

It is quite unknown and not mentioned in many guidebooks. I went there to the restaurant: the palace is under restoration and hosts a hotel. I had lunch there and it was delicious: fruit juice, carrot and coriander soup and yogurt and cucumber salad. The service is impeccable and the environment beautiful. The price is European standard. With your meal you are offered a guided tour of the palace which is really amazing. When it's finished it will be a real jewel but even now it is great. Worth a visit.

Merta City is a buzzing little town enroute from Ajmer to Nagaur or Bikaner. This town has been immortalised by the Charbhuja temple of 15th Century saint Meera Bai as she was called.
This temple is situated just next door to the Rao Dudhaji Palace which is now a museum of sorts.
The Charbhuja temple is a must visit for every tourist on this circuit. For the devout, it is definitely Lord Krishna's abode.

Nagaur Fort

Reviewed By Rajib_Deysarkar - Bengaluru, India

"Nagaur Fort" a.k.a. "Ahhichatragarh Fort" also known as the "Fort Of The Hooded Cobra", is a fort in Rajasthan with a difference. Unlike most of other forts of Rajasthan where the grandeur and opulence are still visible and well preserved and is some case more of the attraction than the fort itself, the Nagaur fort is in real sense a fort where the past still lives in its ruins. Though the fort is quickly getting back to it's past glory by the active work done by archeologist and more so after getting the "Asia-Pacific Heritage award for cultural conservation" from UNESCO, it is still a place where you can probably hear the footfalls of royals from the past or the neighs of their horses or the music flowing out of Santoor while the musicians of the royal court plays their instruments sitting on a raised platform in the middle an artificial tank.
If you are lover of history who loves to move around ruins and try to live in the past, I doubt there is any better fort in Rajasthan than the Nagaur fort. The biggest advantage is, it is devoid of the crowd of colourful tourist for whom this is an old structure in ruins and also doesn’t fall in the regular tourist circuit. But for those who wants to wander around a fort which is built on level ground with little to defend itself than its mighty walls and brave hearts defending it, this fort is worth a visit.
Inside the walls of the fort are palaces, Mughal Gardens, mosques, temples, reservoirs, water systems, Fountains, open terraces, etc. dating to the time of Mughals. Dominating the landscape is a five-domed mosque built by Akbar. Also adorning the walls of the fort and ceilings of the palaces are beautiful painting.
Interestingly as abandoned and in ruins the "Ahhichatragarh fort is from inside, outside the walls of the "Ahhichatragarh fort, you'll land up in a very busy, noisy and dirty Rajasthani city which is so typical of India.
As to reaching the Nagaur fort, it is right in the city of Nagaur and is halfway between Jodhpur and Bikaner. You can hire a car from Jodhpur/Bikaner for a round trip or while moving from one of these bigger cities to the other and halt for some 2 or 3 hours at Nagaur. You can even take a Bikaner or Jodhpur bound train from each of the cities and get down at Nagaur station (a lot of trains gives a halt at Nagaur) and then take a auto-rickshaw to the fort. Unfortunately there is not much accommodation available in Nagaur except "Hotel Raj Inn", a basic hotel near the railway station which is mainly targeted at small business communities visiting Nagaur. They have quite a few small double bed AC rooms and perhaps the best restaurant near the railway station. However if you are ready to shell out quite some money, then you can also stay at "Khimsar fort resort" which is also a fort cum hotel and not allowed for visitors unless you've booked a room and from outside looks like a posh and very comfortable place to stay. Depending on the season, "Royal Tents" also sets up luxury tents within the fort.
Apart from Nagaur fort, other places of interest in Nagaur are - "Cenotaph of Amar Singh Rathore" and "Tarkeen Dargah".
Note: Trip Advisor has another listing of Nagaur fort but it is under the category of Hotels, which is not correct. Though the reviews done there are about the historical site of Nagaur fort, but they are under incorrect category. If possible, I would request Trip Advisor admin to move them under this appropriate category.

Yes, I loved this temple experience and have been here many times. You might get to see some newly wed couples coming here after their marriage to bow infron Mataji for her blessing. As per hindu rituals every cast has their own kul mataji means a family keeping faith in one godessess from very old time and their carry on the same.
Good Temple must visit nor very far away from Nagaur City must be around 30 kms.
