Osorezan Bodaiji, i.e. Bodai Temple on Mt. Osore, was established over 1200 years ago by En'nin, a Japanese Buddhist priest. It honors the bodhisattva Jizo, whose virtue is linked to that of mother earth. Osorezan Bodaiji is a sacred place, and is said to be particularly precious for the grieving parents of deceased children.
The temple is located in an unpopulated sulphurous valley surrounded by eight wooded mountain peaks. It was a striking setting during our visit in the mid-summer, and must be downright spectacular at the height of the changing colors of mid-October.
The fields of decorated jizo statues located adjacent to the temple were beautiful. It was deeply poignant to view the offerings of food, stone piles, and children's pinwheels left by grieving visitors. The temple and its surrounding grounds imbued me with the sense of having visited a truly sacred space.

Yagen Valley is perhaps the most under-rated, low-profiled and beautiful place I have ever been to.
This place is visited by foreigners from Europe, America, Australia etc however no Asians. This was what the mistress of my accommodation told me.
Considering the isolated location of this place, it is not hard to figure why.
Multiple change of transport which includes trains, bus and car. Did that scare you off already? Let me continue.
From Tokyo, take the Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori. From Shin-Aomori, take the local train to Aomori. From Aomori, take the train on Aoimori Railway Line to JR Noheji and transfer to the Ominato Line to Shimokita. From Shimokita, take the Shimokita Kotsu bus to Ohata. There is currently no bus service to Yagen Valley. So you must either take a cab or rent a car. I do not know if there is car rental service in Ohata.
If you are staying over for the night, most of the accommodation here do offer free pick up service from Ohata.
It was early spring, the trees were just barely out of winter's sleep.
Freshly sprouted greens greeted spring. The valley has numerous rapids and Bridges to satisfy any photographers. I was advised by the lady to stay away from the opposite side of the river as trees do topple in early spring where the ground has yet to stablise.
There are 2 public rotemburo onsens at the end of the trail. Meoto kappa no yu and Kappa no Yu. Meoto kappa no onsen has an entrance fee, only 230¥.
You will not regret spending the 230¥.
You will be soothed with the view of smooth flowing river and rising Mountains.
The Kappa no yu is just a few ten metres away. This onsen is free. Previously it used to be a mixed rotemburo. However due to the bad conduct of certain bathers, now there is a designated time slot for man and woman.
Beautifully maintained and wonderful views.
Yagen Valley is one of those place I have wanted to visit but never had a chance.
Now that I am here, I wished I had come sooner.
Understand from the mistress the autumn foliage is fantastic.
You can bet on your last dollar I will be here again.

Bridge located right next to the entrance to Mt Osorezan temple and grounds. Unfortunately supporting timbers are very badly rotted and the bridge was closed off with rope barrier and warning signage. However, as the bridge the souls of the departed must cross and the wonderful guardian demon statues make this stop worthwhile. It is also the first location at Mt Osorezan where you get the full force of the sulphur smell in the air.
