Chimney Sweep Monument

Reviewed By Cora_v - Kyiv

This cute street statue to the Chimneysweep with the cat at his feet is hard to miss. The human-size monument is standing right on the pavement in the very heart of Mukacheve – the pedestrian zone of Myra Ave, next to the Star hotel.
The “Happy Chimneysweep” monument created by People's Artist of Ukraine Ivan Brovdiy was unveiled as recently as in 2010. The locals call it “Bertalon-Bachi” because of its well-known prototype Bertalon Tovt, a resident of Mukachevo and a real Chimneysweep of the Communal Department #3.
I’m sure many would say “well, it’s just a statue”. But we, Ukrainians, believe that a meeting with a chimney sweep brings good luck. So don’t miss a chance to grab his button or a tube brush and make a wish! All you need is to believe...

Mukacheve Town Hall

Reviewed By Papudrakus - Warsaw, Poland

Town hall in Mukacheve is such a special building that you cannot miss it. It is situated on the corner of main streets. Out of business hours you cannot go inside but just to take a picture there is worth to be there
One curious thing is big LCD screen nearby, which light the street and make a big noise of adverts.

Latorica River

Reviewed By Cora_v - Kyiv

Latorica is one of the longest rivers in the Transcarpathians. Its nature is variable, but in Mukacheve it turns to a slow lazy river floating through the green slopes. In conjunction with some magnificent city sights - St. Nicholas Convent foremost, its beauty appears in a quiet splendour here. If you walk from the city centre, don’t rush to cross it - I found the view of the Convent across the Latorica the most scenic.
Mukacheve was initially developing on the left bank of the river. But today Latorica flows through the city and divides it on the right bank (the central part) and the left bank.
The entire town owes its origins to the river. In ancient times, there was a huge mill on its banks that made corn flour («Muka»). This is where, according to some sources, the name of Mukacheve comes from. And the city has developed in this area because of the fertile soils of the river valley, and the strategic location at the crossroad of the ancient Slav trade routes.
We have enjoyed walking along the Latorica greatly, and at a certain point were tempted to set up a picnic on the rich green grass by the water. Keep in mind that there are just a few Bridges across the Latorica - all dull from architectural viewpoint, and they are not located too close to each other, although in a walking distance.
One of the signs of Latorica cleanliness is that trout and many other fish species can still be found here. Fishing in Latorica is very popular, although not easy due to strong currents. But in Mukacheve, where its current is slower, we have seen lots of people fishing.
Rafting (outside Mukacheve though) is among other popular attractions of the Latorica, especially among amateurs, since there are no dangerous or too difficult cataracts in it.
Finally, the Latorica river is one of the favourite rest spots of the locals, and as such provides amazing people-watching opportunities.

St. Nicholas Monastery

Reviewed By Cora_v - Kyiv

In my opinion, Orthodox Monastery of St. Nicholas is a must-see in Mukacheve, second next after the Palanok Castle. Peaceful atmosphere, amazing scenery with the Latorica River right by and rich history make it a marvellous place to visit, even for non-believers.
Located in a fair distance from the city centre. So I recommend taking a cab to get there and then treating yourself for a scenic walk back to downtown along the green slopes of the Latorica River (see my separate review). One of the best views of the monastery is from the other side of the river.
St. Nicholas is one of the oldest monasteries in the area and also a remarkable monument of sacral architecture.
It was built on the hill called Chernecha Hora (Monk’s Mountain). According to the legend, those were the monks from Kyiv Pechersk Lavra who came together with Anastasia, the daughter of Kyiv Prince Yaroslav the Wise and the wife of the Hungarian King Andrew I that settled here in XI.
The known history of the monastery dates back to the second half of the XIV and is associated with Prince Theodore Koryatovich. One day during the hunt he was attacked by a predator and, fearing mortal danger, promised to build a monastery if kept alive. The animal did not touch the prince, and he built a wooden monastery here.
For many years St.Nicolas was an important cultural centre. It maintained historic records, including of the ancient Transcarpathian history, had a library and a school. Many valuable Old Church Slavonic books were kept here and the rare records like “Transcarpathian Gospel” (1401) and “The Bible” by Ivan Fyodorov (1581).
In XV St. Nicolas Monastery was the residence of the Bishop of Mukacheve. In XVII, the monastery joined the Basilian Order.
Shortly after the WWII, the Soviet authorities declared the liquidation of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The monks were forced to either convert, or exile, and the monastery was transformed into an Orthodox nunnery, a convent for the nuns from the other closed monasteries. Its collection of rare books and manuscripts was largely transferred to the Uzhhorod University; some samples were given to the local museums and archives.
Presently, St. Nicolas Monastery remains an acting nunnery, but both pilgrims and visitors are allowed inside. It is wise to preserve a conservative dress-code while visiting the convent.

Keltic Yard

Reviewed By Natalia_Vlasenko - Odessa Oblast, Ukraine

I've found out about this place from my friend, Ukrainian writer Andriy Lyubka, who knows well the owner of Keltic Yard. I've read impressions of Andriy and made up my mind to take a look of Keltic Yard too. I love dicovering new places, especially when they're unique and offer you acquaintance with local food and culture.
Keltic Yard is situated near Mukachevo town, in Zakarpattya region, Western Ukraine. Actually I lived in Uzhgorod, regional centre of Zakarpattya. It's easy to get from Uzhgorod to Mukachevo by bus (it starts from bus station every 15-30 minutes and takes about 30-40 minutes to get to Mukachevo).
Keltic Yard is eco-mansion, which offers degustations of handmade wines and cheese. Also you can try tasty handmade bread (made in old oven!). I had such degustation and enjoyed it much!:)
The address of Keltic yard is: 1 Pidlovachna Street (it's out of Mukachevo, at the highway Kyiv-Chop).
If you want to book a degustation in advance or have any questions, you can call to the owners of Keltic yard: +380507797752; +380660053501
