Alleen hierom wil je weer een keer naar Lochem terug. Een ruim assortiment, vriendelijk personeel en heel veel boeken. En een winkel waar je heerlijk in kunt grasduinen.

I enjoyed my visit to the historic CASTLE RUURLO dating from the year 1326.The castle tower dates from 1572 and parts of the castle date from the 16th century.
Inside the historic building there is an interesting exhibition of masterpieces by the Dutch painter CAREL WILLINK(1900-1983)in his detailed and magical style of oil-painting.
Carel Willink called his style of painting "imaginary realism" and art critics called it "magical realism".The Carel Willink museum opened june 27 2017 and was created by industrialist Hans Melchers (Bloemendaal1938) who also founded Museum More in nearby Gorssel. Before the opening of both museums the masterpieces were displayed in Spanbroek Noord Holland province in the former "Scheringa Museum voor Realisme".
After closure of this private art-project by former dutch banker Dirk Scheringa the collection was bought by industrialist Hans Melchers and can now be enjoyed once more by the public.I have to say that the charming castle and Gardens in Gelderland province make a more fitting decor for the paintings compared to the former school at the village of Spanbroek in Noord Holland province.
Museumjaarkaart is accepted and castle is 10 minutes walk from Ruurlo NS railway station.

The paintings of Dutch artist Hermanus Berserik (1921-2002) who worked and lived in The Hague and nearby Rijswijk are shown in a large temporary exhibition at Museum MORE Gorssel.I enjoyed the intimate artwork and the documentary film (shown in the upper galery )about the late artist. The range of artwork was impressive; from his earliest work at the Koninklijke Kunstacademie Den Haag to his latest work made just before his death in 2002.

I am not particularly interested in the topic of this museum, but had a pleasant surprise when we visited the Kristal museum. The collection was presented very well and there was plenty to learn for people of all ages. The information included the basics as well as the more scientific aspects. Interactivity was catered for with a very good treasure hunt as well as an activity room to learn panning for gold.
My (teenage) daughters were fascinated by the fossils and we all enjoyed the 'sparkly things'.

We visited just after 4 May when the Dutch commemorate Remembrance Day for their fallen soldiers, especially those of WWII. Each of the more than 1,500 graves was adorned with two roses. How touching.

Today I went to the castle in hopes of having a peek inside, however that wasn't possible. Open for the public are the watermill, the restaurant and the park.
In the park you have a few options for a short, or longer walk. In the park there is some art available, which makes it nicer, but all in all it is not special and certainly not a MUST see.

This was my great grandfathers family home, and what a lovely place to visit. Yes i may be biased but I was genuinely impressed by the standard to which the house and grounds are maintained. On a par with the UK National Trust, whose attention to detail and levels of authenticity is exceptional.
Servants accommodation appears very civilised, above ground even unlike in the UK. Maybe that's because the high water table means that below ground level would be unbearable damp!!
