During our trip to Cyprus we took time to visit Saint Hilarion Castle on the Northern coast of the island overlooking Kyrenia.
The castle is quite extensive. being spread over several layers encompassing the outer ward, the lower ward and the upper ward where the Royal apartments are located.
You need to be moderately fit to climb to the top, but it's worth the effort because the views from the top are breathtaking. Expect to spend a few hours here and take water with you on the climb.
Refreshments and toilets are available in the cafe at the base of the castle,

Abtei von Bellapais Bellapais Abbey
The monastery is just a five minute gentle uphill walk from the coach park. As you approach the ruins you cannot help being impressed by the gothic architecture. Take time to walk amongst the ruins and soak up the tranquil atmosphere, you can see why the monks built their monastery here. There are stairwells and passageways that allow you to ascend to the upper levels where you will have commanding views of the local countryside all the way down to the coast.

We were not warned about how difficult this would be to access. Drove from the North side of the Mountains looking for the track off to the right. Little did we know we went right past it but there was no sign. Immediately after the Buffavento Restaurant at the top of the pass there is dirt track off to the right. It is not signed!!! so we missed it. Drove on down to the plain, followed signs off the main Lefkosa to Famagusta road which took us up into the hills to the village of Taskent. From there the road began to get rough until we reached a picnic site. From there the road is not suitable for hire cars. Could not find the foot trail up to the castle so we gave up. Driving back across the hills the way we had come, we spotted the track we had missed earlier on. Excitedly we parked the car only to find it was a 6km walk to the castle.
Moral: Be prepared! Either go early in the day and dressed ready for the hike or take a 4x4 vehicle that should make it without any trouble. Or give up. But I am sure it would have been worth the visit from the reviews I have read.

Mostly in reasonable condition, the castle overlooks the old harbour of Kyrenia. One can walk round most of the walls, but it is neccesary to climb down to the courtyard, and up again, to complete the circuit. Also contains the shipwreck museum, and rooms in both the Lusignan & Venetian Towers.

We visited here whilst on holiday and spent a couple of hours wandering around this house that showed the style of the 1960's house built by the Greek Cypriot Paulides, lawyer to Archbishop Makarios and Mafia member. The rooms are just as he left them and there are many original features. It is situated in an army base so you will need passports and the entry fee is paid with a credit/debit card only. There is a café in the grounds too which wasn't open when we visited unfortunately

We were staying in the Riverside Hotel on the outskirts of Kyrenia for three days and our itinerary gave us a couple of opportunities to explore the harbour and old town. As you would expect there's the old town built around the harbour and the new town extendeing inland. We were shuttled down to the coach park which was on the edge of the old town just a few minute walk from the harbour and castle. Kyrenia harbour is very picturesque, take time to walk out on the breakwater which extends beyond the castle and affords splendid views of both the harbour and castle.
You can take your pick of restaurants around the harbour's edge as there's something to suit all tastes and pockets.
I would certainly welcome the opportunity to visit Kyrenia again.

This shipwreck museum although small has a very interesting history of how this shipwreck was discovered and it’s conservation. Also, displayed here are photos of the archaeologists that dove into the sea to recover the contents and other items associated with this ship. There are displays of the actual clay pots that were inside the ship and the contents of these pots.

Of the Beaches we found in the north, this was the best in the area. Plenty of clean sand and very little litter (something sadly the rest of the Beaches had in abundance). The atmosphere on the beach was calming and friendly. Plenty of areas for a snorkel and a swim. The bay has sand bottomed areas that go out quite far and also rocky areas that have plenty of fish life to watch.
Would happily spend another few hours bobbing around enjoying the friendly and inquisitive fish.
Prices in the little sea front cafe were cheap and cheerful. Exactly what I would expect from a beach hut cafe.

Don't waste your time giving your car to the Valet and going inside only to find the well recommended restaurants are both closed until early evening.
Took us 15 minutes to get our car back and decided on Salty's fish and chips as a reliable fall back when shunned.
