The Bell Inn, set in the lovely historic village of Horndon on the Hill, is a 15th Century Coaching Inn run by the same family for over 75 years. The two busy bars have the warm, friendly atmosphere of a 'proper' pub. There's an open fire, numerous ales on hand pump and a top-class wine by the glass list. The menu changes daily, using seasonal and local produce where possible. Upstairs, and in the Georgian properties next door but one, are 27 individually styled bedrooms featuring both modern and period twists that remain sympathetic to the beautiful buildings in which they reside. The Bell is featured in all the 'serious' guides and has won numerous industry awards including being recommended in The Times Cool Hotel Guide 2014 and The Sunday Times Food List as one of the 10 best gastropubs in the UK.
Here for lunch in the restaurant on Mother’s Day. Not the first time we’ve been here and it’s always a fine dining experience. Large and varied menu and wine list. Excellent quality of food, presented with an interesting mix of flavours and combinations. Mother-in-law very picky when it comes to dining out, but she totally enjoyed the high-quality food and first class service. Highly recommended.

Booked for Mother's Day, really nice waitress so no issues there. The food was really disappointing but the worse thing was the disgusted of all our plates? They stunk of drains or dirty dishwasher! I couldn't eat hardly anything and couldn't wait to get rid of the plates and leave. Not a very good Mother's Day lunch.

An excellent product starts with the careful selection of the finest fresh ingredients. We source local produce whenever possible, our meats are reared at Essex farms and our fish is delivered fresh daily with much of our fruit and vegetables grown at home in the kitchen garden.
Our party of 11 included 3 children with 1 in a wheelchair. The staff were fantastic with us all, didn't mind my son wheeling everywhere, they even set up a little table just for him as he doesn't like sitting round a big table. I...MoreThank you for taking the time to review our Restaurant, we always try to cater for everyone so everyone has a good time. We are glad you had an enjoyable afternoon and look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Regards Darren

The Gun Pub is a welcoming and friendly traditional style pub with a fantastic bar menu that will suit all tastes ranging from light bites to traditional fish and chips, steak and ale pie and our very own minted lamb shanks. On Sundays a full Sunday roast with all the trimmings is served in the Restaurant and bar areas. There is a large selection of all types of beverage at competitive prices. We have function facilities available for private parties and weddings and we also cater for funeral receptions. We hold tribute nights in the Restaurant with a fine dining experience with a menu specially chosen for each of these evenings and we also hold special events and help others raise money for their chosen charities.
4 couples attended cliff tribute night, 24th. November 2017 from the moment we arrived were made welcome the staff were young but compliments to them for there efforts to keep us happy the 3 course meal was way above what was expected . The meal was enjoyed by all of us overall the evening was great. Cliff was very good and will be happy to visit again. The Only thing that was not perfect was it was a bit cold but it was extremely cold when we left so understandable. We all traveled long distances for this venue and we were not disappointed thanks to the staff, chef, and of course Cliff (Jimmy jemain)

This was a last minute thing with some friends that were leaving to see the world. We had no trouble get a lovely booth despite not booking a table. We ordered meals off the £5 menu. The chicken curry was a firm favourite with the girls whilst I had the sausage and mash with crispy onions. Absolutely delicious . This is the perfect place for a good wholesome meal. Whether with a group or with family, a definite favourite for some good pub style nosh!!!!

I have been visiting Aroma for many years, usually as a pre-bowling or cinema meal, without issue.
There is a wide variety of food ranging from pancakes to Indian dishes to a section of smaller service stations with items such as chicken nuggets and mini cocktail sausages. The staff are always polite and attentive and quick to clear away dirty plates and take further drinks orders if needed.
However, on this one occasion I leave disappointed. When I was at the restaurant I helped myself to a few of the chicken nuggets and mini cocktail sausages and felt that the nuggets were, on this occasion, a little lukewarm as opposed to piping hot like the rest of their food. I ate two out of my three nuggets but left the final one put off a bit by it’s temperature. I paid for meal at the end and thought nothing more of it and continued to our film, neglecting to buy anything else to eat due to feeling full.
When we left the film I began to feel a little bloated/unwell but put this down to just having perhaps eaten too much. When I got home this feeling intensified and I visited the loo once but was not sick.
It is now 2:15am and I sit writing this having just got up and been very sick after hours of laying awake with a sore stomach and feeling queasy. I still feel unwell now and shall likely sleep hugging the toilet bowl tonight!
As I said before, I have visited aroma many times before without issue but can only think that the chicken nuggets were not properly cooked/heated on this occasion and wish to flag this up for attention.

That being said, the service was good.
The food was all OK but nothing more. The lamb was a bit tough and the veg dish was lacking flavour. The popadoms and Naan were lovely.
The place was half full and the people in were regulars so maybe `I just chose my curry badly.

Our menu includes a wide range of stone-baked pizzas, authentic Italian pastas and risottos, a selection of grill dishes and fresh salads, all served in a warm and family friendly environment.
We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The Leisure Park was busy, as usual, but the restaurant was very quiet. We were shown to our table directly we entered.
The waitress was friendly, but when she gave us our menus,(which appeared to be quite old and tired-looking) she told us of several meals that were unavailable. I am not sure of her nationality, but neither of us were able to understand what she had said. Even when we asked her to repeat it, we still could not fully understand.
Our choice of mains included a risotto, with an addition of chicken...if I were to have it again, I would only opt for the risotto, which was tasty, but not the chicken, which was bland and added nothing, in my opinion to this dish... and calzone. The latter was my husband's choice, and one of his favourite meals in Italian restaurants. He was rather disappointed with it, because the crust was very thick and doughy, and limited the amount of filling included, which he did like.
The desserts were the highlight of the meal and delicious; cheesecake and tiramisu.
Having eaten there some years ago, and really enjoyed it, this visit was rather disappointing.
There are so many restaurants to choose from at this venue, it is in need of a shake-up, if it is to compete for business.

We welcome you to our family run restaurant for brunch lunch and dinner. We have a snug which can seat up to 22 people for that special occasion or just a family Sunday lunch. There is a conservatory area or main dinning area. All have booths which can seat 2 to 6 people. Our food is Prepared from fresh produce daily by chefs who can adapt to your requirements. Come and try us I'm sure you will be happy with the excellent quality of our food wine and beer.
This is one of our favourite places and we invited friends to join us for dinner. We deliberately booked an early dinner, and the table was ready even though it was very busy. Now the disappointment. On the main menu, there were 3 of the special meals not available (including the best liver and bacon) and pork and fillet steak. Our friends decided on the rib eye but asked for an alternative to chips, perhaps a jacket - absolutely no chance, finished eating mash ! Having said that the food was excellent and our server very attentive, but after the disappointment of the main course, there was little or no puddings, so we passed. All in all, we will think twice about returning but check beforehand what is on the menu. We did not expect this at 7-30pm.
