Plitvice Lakes National Park

National park Plitvice Lakes is considered one of the most beautiful national parks in the world. Plitvice Lakes make wonderful blend of oak Forests, meadows, rocks and lakes. You can explore them by walking along the lakes, by electric train or electric boat.

Founded in 1949, Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest national park in Croatia and one of the oldest. It is located in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The park extends 296 square kilometres and is world-famous for its lakes, Waterfalls, and cascades which descend 133 metres over a distance of about eight kilometres. The lakes are also renowned for their turquoise colour. Water entering the lakes starts at the confluence of the Bijela Rijeka and the Crna Rijeka. Water exiting the lowest lake forms the Korana River. It takes upwards of six hours to explore the park’s 16 lakes (12 upper and four lower) on foot (you can shave off two hours by leveraging the park's free boats and buses [departing every 30 minutes from April to October]). Kozjak is the park’s largest lake. Veliki Slap, a waterfall within the park, is the tallest in Croatia at 78 metres! Plitvice Lakes National Park is heavily forested with mostly beech, spruce, and fir trees. It is also home to bears, wolves, butterflies, lizards, eagles, trout, owls, and lynxes. Plitvice Lakes National Park is UNESCO World Heritage site. Approximately one million people visit the park each year. Entrance costs €24 for adults during the peak season. It is open from 7:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Swimming is not permitted in any of the lakes.

Commonly, the Park is divided in the Upper and the Lower lakes. It is complicated to miss them, since the park is quite compact and can be visited in one day. Hard for me to say which ones are better, since I visited all of them and I recommend to visit all the park at once.

We had a great guide on our trip, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The cave itself had some great sites (although I have seen better looking ones) and lots of history to it. The stories of the guide is what makes it more interesting. It made the activity worthwhile.

Zip Line Center "Pazi Medo"

We are at the Western border of Plitvice Lakes National Park. Zip-line center "Pazi Medo" (Beware of the bear) besides the new zipline, also has other activities for our nature lovers: We created and marked bicycle routes and prepared a registered para-sailing and para-gliding take off and landing area. There is also artificial rock climbing wall for sports climbing. For detailed informations please visit our web or facebook page.

The starting station is decorated wonderfully (and they have beer :)). You get dressed by the staff and then you jump in a van to be driven to the top of the hill from which the zip line starts. The very first view from the top of the hill is a bit scary (in a good way), but once you start descending, it doesn't feel at all like you're going fast, nor that you're hung high. The views and the nature are amazing, but the adrenaline I hoped for was simply not there. You can also try climbing at an artificial rock. The staff was friendly and professional.

Degenija Tours

Spend an interesting day on a bike cycling through the nature & Forests of Rakovica county. Things to see & do: Canyon of Korana river and watermill, Fortress of Old Town of Dreznik (11th Century), Rakovica countryside, Barac Caves, picnic break, swimming (depending on the water level), glass of local chardonnay.

After booking Hotel Degenija directly online when I inquired their rates for transfers I found them quite competitive compare to other big agencies in Croatia. So I booked through them Zagreb-Plitvice-Split transfer and private guided tour of Plitvice National Park. I was extremely happy with their arrangements. I think all the credit goes to their young dashing and courteous driver cum guide Andrija. This young guy had all the knowledge of not only Plitvice but also of Croatian history. I am hundred percent sure that he will go far ahead in life in whichever field he selects in future. GOD bless you Andrija.

We were taken to the farm by Funky Zagreb Private Tours when returning to Zagreb after a day tour to Plitvice lakes. The farm is off the main road and in a rural setting. The farming family originally from the city chose to move to the country to enjoy a better lifestyle. Initially the farm produce was made as it often is from subsistence farms, they soon realised that to make a business they needed more technical skills and so returned to university to study cheese making. Now after some years they are taking in milk from neighbouring farms and producing a wider variety of cheeses.
The visit included a meal of typical Croatian dishes and wines from the area. While their facilities are modern it is not too far a bridge to see how people lived and worked in this rural area.
The family are most delightful and will help you enjoy the experience realising how the produce is grown as well as how the meals are prepared. If you are interested to get off the beaten track find this place on your way to or from the Plitvice Lakes and Zagreb.
