Aare Gorge

Reviewed By J_travelB - Guelph, Canada

This gorge is quite an experience. A walk-through cut in the mountain with walkways and tunnels along the face of the rocks and through in places. Very new to see. Seems not all that well advertised but quite impressive - by far! Well worth stopping here if you are in the area. It is about 1.4km to walk from one end to the other. The cost is very reasonable with gift shops and washrooms at both ends and you can enter from either end as well.
We were there in August, so it was pleasant and warm throughout the walk. A lot of work went into designing this experience - all the structures to walk on built into the rock face. Very neat! Free parking.

Bergbahnen Meiringen-Hasliberg

The cable car company Meiringen-Hasliberg operates a summer and winter sports resort in the Bernese Oberland, ranging from 600 up to 2500 m asl. Every year, we transport over half a million people to the sun in the Mountains, where they explore sports, culinary and alpine culture. The Haslital holiday region is located in Switzerland between Interlaken and Lucerne in the eastern Bernese Oberland. The valley is nestled between the passes Brunig, Grosse Scheidegg, Susten and Grimsel. Family-friendly, varied leisure and sports facilities, but also the awareness of tradition and cultural characteristics, are the characteristics of an impressive holiday region in the heart of Switzerland.

If you stay in Hasliberg, you are very central from a lot of sightseeing. Only 30 minutes from Ballenberg Museum, Meiringen, Aareschlucht, Brienzersee... And there are such a lot of things to do and to see! In Hasliberg there are two mountain Railways which are going up and lead to a lot of wonderful hikes. With small children I recommend the two Muggenstutz-hikes. They are all about the dwarfes of Hasliberg and their adventures. Very very cute made!

Gletscherschlucht Rosenlaui

Reviewed By incahueca - Geneva, Switzerland

This is a highlight if you are in the Haslital region above Meiringen. The walk through this glaciar gorge in Rosenlaui is particularly impressive. The path can be wet and people with vertigo should not watch the river below. But the scenery is fantastic. It is very refreshing during hot days. Better start early morning if you want to be in a quiet atmosphere. It takes about half an hour to get through the gorge. Entrance fee is 8 swiss francs.
A great day trip includes other fantastic attractions around Rosenlaui. For this purpose catch at yellow bus to Schwarzwaldalp from Meringen train station. Check the bus schedules as there are departures every hour. Go to the final stop Schwarzwaldalp, visit the free and scenic "Säge" ("saw factory") and walk around within one hour time. Then take the same bus back to Meiringen, stop at Rosenlaui and walk into the gorge before geting back to the bus one or two hours later. Go down to Meriingen again and stop at Zwirgi bus stop. From there you can walk to the top station of the Reichenbach funicular and enjoy the views on the impressive Reichenbach waterfall. You can take a funicular ride or go up on the same way and catch the bus back to Meiringen.

Muggestutz Zwergenweg

Adventures on the Dwarf Trail Dwarves have long been present in our valley and Muggestutz is the oldest Hasli dwarf. Some of his adventures have been written about and children can relive his adventures on the trail between Mägisalp and Bidmi. They will enjoy the pinecone drying platform, the eagle swing, the caves and much more! Hiking time for the 5km dwarf trail from Mägisalp via Gummenalp to Bidmi is approx. 2 hrs. Starting point is approx. 100m below the Mägisalp restaurant. The trail leads gently down across alpine meadows and through pine Forests.

A path down the hill prepared specifically for children. You take any of the two cable cars (Hasliberg Reuti or Hasliberg Bidmi) and you have to follow the blue Muggestutzweg signs down the hill. There is an explanation In German, English and French when you get to any of the dwarf sites prepared for children. They follow the story of Muggenstutz, his girlfriend Raurinde and their friends. You'll find little dwarf houses with all the furniture, plates, pans, clothes... to play with. Also places where dwarfs are supposed to dry and store pines, interesting Watermills, Bridges, etc. Little children (and not so little) have a great time, and so do parents

Fill your suitcase with treasures,
They all have a story
That becomes a memory for life...."

The train journey of 7.5 kms takes more than an hour, steam driven, through tunnels cut into the Mountains, across cattle grazing Meadows, and landscape untouched. It's an experience that takes you into a era long past with the rail staff dressed in traditionally. A must ride for tourists.

Small cable car leaving every 12mins and taking 8 people up the mountain to the start point for the walk to the bridge. Book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment on the day.
Walk is 1hr15-1hr30 to the bridge, quite a tough walk, hiking boots required. Cool in the morning when valley is in shade- gets very hot later!
Bridge is an impressive structure, 170m long with great views, swings a bit when lots of people on the bridge. Definitely worth the hike.

Reichenbach Falls

This 656-foot waterfall is best known for its fictional significance as the place of Sherlock Holmes's death.

Reviewed By James S - Houston, Texas

We went at the end of July 2017, after heavy rain for a few days, and the falls were really, really impressive. You squeeze up the side of them, following a perfectly safe, but narrow pathway hewn out of the gorge's walls, directly above the roaring River and, before you get to the top, it becomes so loud that you can't hear each other, and the spray is such that it comes vertically up due to the power of the water Torrent below. And then, at the top, you come out not far from the gorgeous Rosenlaui valley and hotel, both of which are well worth visiting in their own right.
