A quick visit here from Badajoz and had an unrequested but quite refreshing guided tour by a lovely character whose English wasn't brilliant but who was extremely enthusiastic about this subject. The views are spectacular from the commander's house at the top and Spain is no distance away.

This fortress will give you a good impression about the importance of good build fortress to defend or attack a really wanted place. The fortress is rather empty regarding to armour and materials used in the history of this fortress. You will have a marvellous overview of the environment with Elvas and Babajoz in the area.

By leaving the Cathedral turn left and go uphill for about 150 meters, here you will see the very small “Igreja das Domenicas” who was an ancient feminine Convent of the Dominican Order established in 1528. The construction of Church we can observe nowadays started in 1543 and it was concluded in 1557 in the exact place where used to be the Church of Magdalena., who is also closed on Monday, so I can only show some pictures but we continue on the tour. And the next part is the “Pelourinho”.

The attractive hilltop town of Elvas gained UNESCO World Heritage status do to the small Castle and some of the best perserved, and huge, military fortifications surrounding the town. The Castle itself is small, but hosts a nice museum and outdoor cafe. Views from the top of the walls are wonderful, and one can see in the distance (1.5km away) the star-shaped Forte de Santa Luzia - worth a brief visit, time permitting. Parking is available directly in front of the Castle.

Magnificent example of XVII century architectur!
I was really surprised to find out that it was not on Tripadvisor yet!
Together with others Fortes this one shows very geometric structure, very interesting. Also there is a military museum inside for the same fee.
It is very easy to access by car and cheap to visit.
It is considered World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Staff was very helpful!

Well we were told it was free on a Sunday morning... didn't tell us the inside displays were closed. Silly little conscripts, clueless muppets but a pleasant stroll around some WW1 tanks and cannons. When I got back to the Algarve, seven hours by coach, my vicar asked if I visited the British Cemetery there...Next time. Incidentally don't go to Pizza Rica, it is horrible.

On the other side of the street when you are in front of the Igreja das Domenicas, you can see the “Pelourinho”, or the Elva’s Pillory who is one of the symbolic monuments of this lovely historical town in the vast Alentejo town.
According to some researches, this Pillory was originally from the close by Ouguela department, with a markedly Manu line style.
Its basis is settled in a five step pedestal with a polygonal shape. The column is decorated with semi-spheres, and even nowadays the subjection chains, possibly from the 16th century.

Esta igreja está localizada num local agradável, aberto, perto de um terreiro e de um pequeno jardim. No interior podemos ver paramentos usados nas cerimônias religiosas e visitar um pequeno museu com dádivas de crentes, essencialmente quadros e fotografias
