Chiang Saen is located about five hours from Chiang Mai. The town offers a glimpse into the history of northern Thailand with ruins from the past. The town was founded in the 1300s.

Located in the heart of the infamous Golden Triangle, this museum is dedicated to educating visitors about the history of the opium trade and the dangers of addiction.
We visited the museum as it was raining and we were unable to go up to Doi Tung. However the museum is surprisingly good and well maintained.

The temple is on a huge hillside property overlooking the river. The temple itself is down near the road, and though it's a local pilgrimage centre, it's less interesting for the general traveller than some of the wats in Chiang Saen or Chiang Khong. There's a nice teak ubosot halfway up the hill, but my main reason for returning is the stunning view from the chedi at the top. You can climb the hundreds of steps to get there or drive up the steep, winding, concrete-paved roadway. The chedi itself is very imposing in a modern style that seems somewhat dehumanizing, but the grandiose view is amazing, north up the river towards Chiang Saen or downstream to the east. I have been here a couple of times before and it never fails to excite and move me, especially in the early morning. Plus, it's worth making time to go for a walk along some of the hillside trails. Though it can be crowded at weekends, on a normal weekday you may have the place almost to yourself.

This is the Chedi which was damaged in the recent earthquake. Restoration via Channel 7 support has it back again and the inside of the temple is well presented and used.
The history of the area is deep, and the walk around the grounds shows how long this has been a working site.
The whole of Chiang Sean warrants some further time to delve into the ruins and history

This was originally the opium-growing region of northern Thailand, eastern Burma and western Laos, but is now mainly a tourist attraction.
Actually I visited this place many times and think there are less tourists than in the previous years. This means many shops around are out of business and the place becomes quite. Actually I enjoyed this more relaxing atmosphere very much. More parking space more place at the restaurants. The shops are not important for me because they sell the same Chinese made souvenirs and t-shirts as everywhere in Thailand.

There is not much to do in Chiang Saen so after we saw the Golden Triangle we thought we would check out one of the towns 70 standing temples and this seemed to be the most impressive. Worth a visit if you're travelling back to Chiang Rai as it is sort of on the way.

We cycled around the city one afternoon with our 2 children and found this city to be very enjoyable. You can cycle around the entire walled city in a couple of hours, stopping along the way to admire the mightly Mekong and sample some of the Chinese cuisine.
