This was the fist time in my life I've got surprised by the art in food. Here you find all kind of designs in gateau, with vivid colors and amazing combinations of flavors. It is very well located in downtown Chambery near the elephants square in a gallery that looks glamorously old. You may also have tea here and try they superb Macarons. The best I ever had. Service is great they treat you with delicacy and patience. It takes time to decide among a wide variety of options to buy. I wanted them all.

I believe Chambery is an overlooked prize of a town. It has ancient, by USA standards, buildings, a great history, and amazing people. There are hotels close to everything, and everything is within walking distance of most of the sights. It is a great place to stay if you are visiting the region. The Ville Ancienne offers beautiful architecture, great restaurants, with local cuisine, and a great area for a walking tour. Stay for market day on the weekend, and hear the clarion from the chapel at the chateau ringing through the historic streets. Very family friendly as well.

The highlight of this splendid Cathedral is the unbelievable quantity of excellent 'trompe d'oeil'. This is an Italian style of painting that mimics 3D stone carving. Apparently it was hated by the French when originally introduced into French interiors. This Cathedral is reputed to contain the greatest area of such painting in Europe. Looking upwards, you can barely believe that you are not looking at true stone carving, such is tha quality of the workmanship.

This was the first tourist site we were shown by our guide. She informed us that it was known by locals as the 'quatre sans-derrieres' because the elephants had their front halves shown but not the rear halves. Ah yes, very good. It is worth a casual glance as you proceed on your way to the more interesting mediaeval parts of the town, nothing more.

If you have any interest at all in Rousseau, this is a worthwhile day trip. The house itself is pretty run down, and it would be nice if the people who run the place would put some resources into fixing it up, but the grounds are beautiful and there is something quite spiritual about being there.

You can visit several parts of this chateau but the highlight is the holy chapel. It contains what is reputed to be the best quality Italian trompe d'oeil (optical illusion) painting work in Chambery. It is almost unbelievable that you are not looking at real 3D stonework. Another item of interest is a replica of the Turin Shroud, which was once located in this chapel before being removed to Italy. The guide pointed out where the head and feet of Christ are supposed to have left their mark on the cloth. She did admit that the genuine nature of the original item (or otherwise) is largely a question of faith, since carbon-dating of the cloth suggested that it was manufactured in the middle ages.
