The 10 Best Things to Do in Castries, St. Lucia

September 7, 2017 Fernanda Pittenger

The bustling port city of Castries is St. Lucia's capital. Shoppers flock to the city's dozens of stores and to Castries Market for fruits, vegetables and handicrafts. Sightseers admire murals painted by a local artist inside Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and relax in Derek Walcott Square, named for the St. Lucian Nobel-prize-winning poet. Atop Morne Fortune (Hill of Good Luck) - where the French and English battled over control of the island - visitors take in panoramic vistas.

A dilemma! What to do on St Lucia on Christmas Day? No presents to open, no relatives to visit or to invite for Xmas dinner. But we found the solution in a traditional St Lucian custom—Xmas day beach barbecue excursion!
Denver Sava of Shashamane Experience together with his able and genial helper Dylan, picked us up at the Marigot Bay ferry dock, and together with another family with two teenagers, whisked us off for an all day adventure! Sava’s solid and seaworthy motorboat (see website for image) was perfect for coastal exploration and Dylan pointed out all the Beaches, rivers, and villages as we headed south along the east coast of St Lucia. Even a huge molasses pipeline assembled monthly to load a ships cargo from the beach factory.
Shortly after b noon we arrived at Anse Mame and disembarked onto the loveliest sand beach imaginable complete with palms, a fresh water stream, and thatched umbrella barbecue stations! Snorkeled at both ends of the beach while homemade charcoal was lit and red snapper and king fish were cooked “en papillotte”! Coconut, pineapple, banana, all super fresh and tasty wee appetizers along with peeled sugar cane stems. The fish, served with rice, carrot salad, and plantain was perfect! We found lobster while snorkeling and almost got one to barbecue—but it was Christmas.
Relaxed then on to view the Pitons from sea and landed at the incomparable Sugar Beach for more relaxing and snorkeling. Water so clear and fish so plentiful it was all like a dream—including three foot long squid cruising like a formation of F-16s!
Sava made a great day for us and has a wide range of outings to offer. He can help you to make your own memorable days!

We arrived in St Lucia on Thursday and the sign for the fish and chip night grabbed our attention.
We were the first people in so hoped we'd picked somewhere good, it was a lovely scenic place to sit and chill and I fell in love with some nice but sadly pricey paintings.
People began to turn up in droves so things looked promising and indeed it was a great experience, the fish and chips were spot on and the rum cake a real delight - it's similarity to British treacle pudding brought back childhood memories :-)
The ladies there do a great job, the only improvement could be a few extra members of staff as they have a hell of a job to do to serve everyone.
I'd happily come here again and recommend :-)

We booked a hike up Mt Pimard through Sandals Regency LaToc. We were not disappointed at all. Our tour guide, “Keyes” was extremely informative and explained the history of the mountain and took time to show us local vegetation along the way. The views were amazing and we even enjoyed a glass of rum punch at the end of the hike at a local bar on the beach at the foot of the mountain. This was a fairly strenuous hike at certain points. Wear good shoes and be ready to work your way up. We would totally do this again.

When I have been to or seen other water parks - they are on land. The Splash Island Water Park is in front of the Bay Gardens Beach Resort and it's a ton of fun. First, you swim out to the water park and then you navigate from one floating part to the next. Staying on the floats isn't all that easy as the ocean moves with the waves. It's a blast and safe as there is almost always 3 life guards on duty.

We were privileged to visit the gallery of Mr. Vincent Joseph Eudovic on 11 April, 2017. A true master carver, his works are extraordinary. Along with his son, he carves unique, abstract art as well as traditional masks, plaques and sea animal. The abstracts are individually beautiful and reflect Mr. Eudovic’s skill as he allows the wood to tell him what it wants to become. Most of the mid to large abstract can be pricy, but coming from a world renowned artist who signs his work in front of you, they are worth it. Many smaller pieces are at a much lower price point. This is an exceptional place to visit and if you are looking for abstract wood art, the only place to go

Took my 95 year old dad. Staff was fabulous . It is a bit of an incline so one of the men working there put dad in one of their wheelchairs and wheeled him up the ramp.
Really wasn't that scary with regard to height. Had a great girl with us pointing out the different plants and birds. At the end of the ride they take you on a hike through the rain forest. It is optional . My daughter did it and enjoyed it. Supposedly there are big snakes, scorpions, wild pigs if you are lucky to see them lol. After tour they have a very nice gift shop and you are given a free lemonade or water. Great for people who have problems walking.
