We spent an hour and a half exploring the appealing old town of Caltagirone on our way to Noto. Many of the buildings are decorated with ceramic tiles, and shops spill their vivid ceramics on to the pavements and stairs making it wonderfully vibrant. Yes you must climb the 142 steep steps of the Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte and visit the Cathedral. We a delicious panino mid-way on the stairs and watched the world go by.

These sizeable public Gardens could be really beautiful however at present the area looks sadly neglected hence my 'average' rating. Also the public toilets were filthy. We went there in a little motorized tourist train which was fun. There is a food/coffee stall with outdoor Seating.

We were on a Mission to find the Persepio museum, but the tourist info person misunderstood and sent us to this church instead. We ended up very glad he did! We were trying to figure out what door to enter, when a lovely gentleman unlocked the church, let us in, and started showing us around and explaining all of the important art and artifacts. I speak Italian well enough, though i did have a hard time understanding some of what the items were. We made due with my translating skills, and the monk that was showing us around was so nice! The highlight was the persepio in the basement that details the entire religion starting with Adam and Eve, then the life of Christ. It's all narrated in Italian, and the display lights up when discussing the different events. There's even a water feature, it was really quite impressive!
They do ask for a small donation, which we were more than happy to give for such a personalized tour and behind the scenes look at the church.

In 1608 a staircase was built to connect this church with one at the bottom of the town. It is a lovely old stone building and it is worth ascending the 142 steps to see it. There are also shops on the way up to visit and break your climb if you so desire.

i will admit i like most churches, mostly because each is so different from each other...this one has its own unique interior and i admire it greatly.

This was formerly a prison but is most attractive inside. There are many beautiful paintings by various artists from differing periods

We visited this Nativity museum as part of a tour of other Nativity scenes around Caltagirone, this was one of the best visited as it has on display many different Nativity scenes from all around the world.

Inside the Convent of the Friars Minor Conventual is placed the Diocesan Museum of Caltagirone. The exhibition in its three sections - Silver, Parati and Picture Gallery - offers the visitor, among other works, a Flemish painting of the fifteenth century. Attributed to Vrancke van der Stockt, depicting "The Throne of Grace, the Last Judgement and the Sufferings of the Virgin."
We didn't go into the museum, but for a small fee (kids free), you can visit the gorgeous little chapel. Lovely if you're passing by.
