Capital of the state of Vorarlberg, Bregenz nestles at the foot of Pfander Mountain, on the shores of lovely Lake Constance. Famed for its summer opera festival, Bregenzer Festspiele, the small town of 27,000 welcomes some 200,000 visitors for dramatic evening productions of Puccini, Britten and other classics, held on a stage on the lake itself. Strolling, boating and swimming are also popular activities. Bicycling round Bregenz's cobblestone streets is an easy and pleasant way to explore.

To those who enjoy opera, this performance was incredible. Turns out I am not one of those who enjoy opera so much, but my 6 co-travellers quite enjoyed it.This venue in the open air runs except when lightning is imminent, so we donned ponchos and endured the pre-event rain and then terrarium like humidity within.
Be sure you are a true fan and aware of predicted weather before buying. These are not cheap tickets, and non refundable.

This is a cable car taking you to the top of the beautiful Pfänder mountain.
The Pfaenderbahn (cable-car) in Bregenz near Lake Constanz takes you up a mountain called (have a guess..) yes - Pfaender.
Gives youan excellent view over Bregenz and surroudning
not too expensive, not too scray
avoid going there on a sunny summer sunday - you might get squashed between lazy folks not fit enough walking up the Mountains (as me hehe)

A great way to see views across Bodensee and Bregenz. The hike up took about 2 hours and we caught the cable car down. The last car leaves the top at 7pm. Lovely shaded walk up, but a little slippery in places.

The lovely Peter Zumthor-designed Kunsthaus is a lovely space for art. The exhibition itself was lovely with those huge canvases of Joan Mitchell, the abstract expressionist who has been called an "artist's artist". I enjoyed the 20-minute interview from 1974 playing on a loop downstairs. The display case holds interesting personal items, photos and letters from all sorts including Bourdieu. (Apparently he approved of Mitchell!)
Sadly, there was no catalogue on sale: it was severely delayed. That's a rarity. I imagine the curator is deep **** for that one.

Be sure to visit a local farmer who can give you a tour and taste of their very unique and wonderfully tasting cheese. All local stores carry the cheese of the area as well so you can buy more for later.

Situated in the picturesque area of the old town which is perched in an elevated position above the surrounding area, the Martinsturm chapel features medieval frescoes, whilst the tower contains a military museum (not visited). To get to the chapel requires a walk up a steep hill and through a medieval gatehouse. Once through the gatehouse you are in a whole new world of ancient buildings including the half timbered 17th Century Town Hall. After visiting the area we took the passage at the side of the Deuringschlossle back down to the new town, or if you prefer you can continue to explore the nearby St. Gallus church and the Capuchin Monastery with its Lourdes Grotto.

Bregenz has a lot of nice churches, this one is the biggest and really not worth it. The brick outside is weird in this city and once indoors, it's even worst.

Quaint circular chapel built in baroque style and situated in the heart of the town. It dates back to the 18th century, and is the youngest church in Bregenz. It was built by a theologian to commemorate his rescue from drowning in the nearby Lake Constance, and is dedicated to St.John of Nepomuk, the protector saint of those in peril of drowning. The interior has a fine marble altar with ornate statues.

Im not super keen on museums, but this is one that came as a nice surprise. The museum was modern and interesting and was filled with interactive pieces. We were there for the alpine ski exhibition and found all of the artifacts fantastic! The best part about it was that there were booklets in English and Helga, one of the employees (who speaks perfect english) gave us a little tour of the museum! Thanks for an incredible visit!
