Marianas

Reviewed By Dale W - Cape Town Central, South Africa

Seasonal, local and beautifully crafted dishes from the one and only Marianas country kitchen.
This visit Mariana elevated a humble Angel fish fillet, lightly smoked, into a flavour burst starter dish with marinated red onion in white balsamic, home baked ciabatta, fennel floret anis bombs of intense flavour and finely sliced apple. Inspired, clever cooking.
Confit duck never fails to satisfy with her own enviable preserved clementines.
Lunch ended with 4 tables of guests switching chairs and interacting with each other. Like minded in so many ways. More than just a meal. Food, an inspiration and a catalyst for bringing so much pleasure.

What a wonderful surprise at the Tikka Palace! not only was the place light, bright and beautifully furnished in a tranquil spot in Stanford, but the food was amongst the top 3 restaurants ever eaten in world-wide. My husband and me are Brits and have almost been brought up on Indian curry as it is so popular in the UK. We have eaten in literally hundreds of Pakistan and Indian restaurants in the UK and abroad and can honestly say that the Tikka Palace is amongst the top 3 Indian restaurants that we have dinned in. The Vindaloo was very spicy but still exceptionally flavoursome, the Jalfrezi too, and the basmati rice was firm but cooked, non-sticky and the Peshwari nan was sweet and a pleasant balance for the spicy curries. Our friend had Chicken Kurma and although she doesn't really love mild curries, she finds the spicy curries too spicy for her liking. The waiter overheard this and offered to ask the chef to make the Kurma medium spicy as opposed to mild. When it arrived she said that it was the best Kurma ever eaten, not inedible spicy but a delicious tasty Kurma with quite a kick to it. For starters we all shared some very tasty vegetable samosas. The waiter service was also perfect. Friendly, professional but not intrusive. He also served our table speedily and effectively. There isn't any alcohol served here but to be honest the food is is super tasty that we didn't notice the lack of alcohol and of course we could always have gone for a drink afterwards if we had wished to. What a pity we live in Vietnam and have to wait such a long time before returning here to holiday again.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary with Lunch. The pleasure started with the welcome at the door - here are staff really pleased to see you. A beautiful location, well worth the 5 km dusty drive out of Stanford village. Beautifully set tables, enthusiastic waitrons. Choices of 3 or 4 courses from the delightful menu, all interestingly different from the norm. A glass of Springfontein Sauvignon Blanc with a 'surprise from the kitchen' was a delightful entree to our lunch.
Go with a budget of R1,300 for two, and if in that league, you will only be impressed.
The kitchen surprises continued between courses and at the end, and added to the enchantment of a special meal on a special day for us. Superb.
Well deserving of their #1 Status in Stanford.

Stanford Harvest

Stanford Harvest Restaurant and Gallery is located on a working Sheep Farm 2 minutes from the centre of town. Stanford Harvest is OPEN from Wednesday to Sunday for Breakfast and Lunch. The restaurant is also always OPEN on Public Holidays and for functions. Sunday lunch is a buffet, and people are travelling from far and near to enjoy the delicious roasts, curries and lovely fresh and interesting veggies. The Ala Carte Menu is relatively small but still varied to cater for many different tastes. The food is traditionally South African such as Bobotie, Curries, Beer Battered Hake, Burgers and Prawns. The Staff are all young and energetic and are blossoming into great chefs and waiters. All who are from the Village Stanford.

This is more than a restaurant set on a farm just outside Stanford. With big grounds and lovely views it could be a great place for families with children.
Mead, a fermented honey drink that goes back to medieval times is produced here so give it a go.
We found the service both friendly and efficient during a recent lunch time visit.
There were 2 babotie options , one served on a waffle.. Feeling adventurous I opted for babotie served on a waffle. The babotie was good , but I wouldn't choose it with a waffle again.
We went during the week so it was very quiet, but at weekends it is probably a different story.
There is an onsite shop selling a variety of preserves, jam and of course mead.
As the owner is an artist there are some interesting artworks with a retro feel on display

This well presented cafe with white interior is a very pleasant stop for either a morning
coffee or tea. In our case it was poached eggs bacon on a chibatta bread which was pleasing on the eye and very tasty. The fruit parfait with granola was also very tasty.
