Restaurant Fornos de Lava" with panoramic view, fresh fish, meat , seefood and organic vegetables & salads from the garden.
With some significant differences from what we were accustomed to in previous years can be said without fear of error that a significant improvement is underway. The snapper in the oven was divine and I wish this family-run restaurant would follow the route of success.

Unimpressive restaurant from the outside, has a large and well lit area upstairs. Excellent food overall, grilled fish (enchereu) especially good. Copious amounts of food. The Frei Gigante white wine from Pico is an excellent dry that will go perfectly with the fish. Very good desserts with an excellent passion fruit mousse/pudding. The best choice in Velas, we kept returning.
I noticed that this restaurant prepares lunch boxes for hikers - if in line with the rest of the food definitely to try!

Only few of the restaurants of the island offer the ameijoas – clams which are growing in the Azores only at one place of Pico. They are not cheap (500 g 18 Euros), but they are cooked very well, and for a starter just to taste them it is enough to order the small portion (500 g) for two (everyone gets about 8 pieces). Delicious! Also top was the Abrótea, style of the house, crispy and covered by a lot of cooked onions which have been so tasty – it must be a secret how they are prepared!. Also the big slice of mero, superb!

On our 4 week trip to Portugal and the Azores we ate in a total of 19 different places. This enabled us to make good comparison between them in terms of food, service, atmosphere and value.
After Reading about the other possibilities in Velas and casing some of them out, including looking at their menus, we decided to eat in the place we had coffee outside at lunchtime. What motivated us to eat there was that it was almost full at lunchtime with what looked like locals having the lunch special menu. On our first night we both had tuna steak and it was very good value for 7.50 Euros, especially given the portion size. The perfectly drinkable red wine was superb value at 3.60 Euros a litre! Our meal on the second night was even better. Once of us had a huge portion of chicken fillets for 6.50 Euros and the other two very good veal chops for 8.50 Euros a litre. Both were served with nice fried sliced potatoes and a nice side salad. On both nights we had two big plates of good food, bread and a litre of good red wine for 18.60 Euros for the two of us. We would definitely go back again as this place was probably the best value for money out of the 19 restaurants we ate in.

We had the good fortune of visiting São Jorge for the first time with a true local, and she took us to Atafona for lunch on our first day. The service was warm and casual, with our entrada a mix of choriço and morcela and queijo made on the island. These littles bites set the tone. Then, a dose of the local clams (amêijoas), the only true natives to the Islands, from what I understand. Tasty, chewy treasures. After running through the options for fresh fish (none, really), we settled on beef steaks, mine with the mushroom and cream sauce. The beef on the Açores is typically inexpensive and delicious (a product of the dairy industry) and the steak came malpasada (rare to medium rare) a little more cooked than we had ordered but still juicy and pink inside. Delicious. The local white wine from Pico Island went well with it all, and only €6,50 a bottle.

The food was fine, the fish better than my steak. Its just by the harbour which is being extended so the cargo container setting does not help and the lighting is a bit gloomy

This is a simple restaurant on the island of Sao Jorge that serves a buffet lunch consisting of the traditional Cozido, the food cooked in the thermal grounds around the volcanic activity. There is nothing fancy to this restaurant, but it does offer the basic island food that people appreciate. It also had soup, cheese and bread out for the taking. I found it to be sufficient, although I probably would have ordered something a little more imaginative, Still, the owners are very friendly, and it was an enjoyable stop on our tour. I would go back for a future lunch.
