We had this restaurant highly recommended through family but our trial dinner did not go well at all. We chose grilled meat and it wasn't tender. The accompanying potato chips weren't well fried either (a bit soft). There was a large family group near us that was way too noisy not controlling the noise they made for such a small space. It was a very unpleasant experience in every way.

I have reviewed this restaurant before and have recently dined here again twice. On each occasion, I travel 50km to get there. Apart from the great food, the journey to reach this remote corner of Portugal is quite spectacular. There are always excellent grilled meats - lamb, veal, venison - served with salads and potatoes. There is good wine - the Alvarinho da Casa is wonderful and inexpensive. Desserts and varied and good - the most outstanding is local ewes' milk cheese with mountain honey. Service is friendly enough. Prices are quite reasonable. Do make the effort to go here if you are in Northern Portugal.

Restaurant with fine critics in the media (newspapers, magazines and internet sites) High quality Regional cuisine 3 catering halls (main hall, events hall and Terrace - capacity 70 Good cellar Great location (Historic town center) ! Portugal starts here... !
Great food! The kid (cabrito) and the veal (naco de vitela) are very good, as are the local Alvarinho wine and the aguardente. A bit expensive, but worth it.

The Buffalo is a delight. Paulo has managed to create in one room a traditional Portuguese style and in the other room a trendy, stylish and fun place to eat and drink. The food is extremely good with top quality ingredients, whether you are eating traditional or from the grill style menu. There is extensive outside Seating but at busy times you would be advised to park at the nearby Thermal Spa (100 metres). There is a very varied drinks menu including beers from around the world. Since moving to Portugal the Buffalo has become my favourite restaurant.

We came for a family horse riding weekend in the beginning in October.
We knew Adega Sabino and Xafarix in Melgaço. They are very good. But they were closed.
So we had to seek for alternatives.
In fact, fortunately, because we found TASQUINHA DA PORTELA.
Excellent food, warm hosting by the owner. Strongly recommend to come and try.
Probably the best around Melgaço.

If you wish to try really typical Portuguese food, you can find it here. This place is an authentic tavern. The menu is simple and short with only 3-4 plates per day. One portion is suitable for two people. For us the price of 10€ per person included house wine, main dish and dessert. If you decide to come here, be early as it gets filled fast and there's sometimes a queue.

PROS
- Price value: low price, about 5€/per person at lunch if you choose the special of the day
- Location: Right in city centre and front of a important church
CONS
- service/staff: not very professional service, very amateur indeed. I beleive is only focuses on local clients, not prepared or they don´t want to deal with someone from outside.
- Food quality: Not that good, very oily and tasteless.
DO I WILL RETURN?
No, I wont
