Mang Engking

The concept is pretty simple, you eat shrimps (fried of honey grilled) and fish, in a local atmosphere of small open cottage in the water. The food is good and you can't get enough of their shrimps.

ViaVia

The whole place has a very good vibe, it is family friendly, and there is a nice mixture of locals, expats and tourists. The staff is really nice and their English is pretty good. Being there feels like being home, truly.
Their bakery offers the best bread in town, and if you buy it after 8 pm, they give you a 50% discount! Don't go too late though, or it will be sold out! ;) They have very good pies and cakes as well, and even some nuts and cheese.
Their resto is really good, with a different dish of the day every single day, a good Indonesian variety, and the cuisine-of-the-world part of the menu (Indian dishes are my absolute favourites!), changing every now and then. Ask Nino for coffee, you won't regret!
The shop has a big assortment of souvenirs, some of them can only be found in there. I think they work with local artists, so you can find modern souvenirs, made with traditional materials, for example.
As I live here, I haven't used their homestay or travel agency, but they look always busy.
ViaVia is a perfect combo! Don't miss it!

The Sawah

PLEASE NOTE: ADVANCE BOOKING is STRICTLY NECESSARY, minimum 8-12 hours ahead. 'Cooking after booking' is the motto: we are not a normal restaurant but a beautiful private villa. Our ONLY and highly appreciated menu is our RIJSTTAFEL (rice table), with about 10 different Javanese dishes. The name rijsttafel is Dutch, the food is totally Indonesian ;-)

Last week we enjoyed a delicious lunch at their beautiful house! After a nice bicycle ride we were greated bij host Wim. He invited us to a nice table outside. TheSawah is well designed, nice decorated, green and quiet and the local staff very friendly. The indonesian dishes tasted delicious and we spend almost the whole afternoon eating, drinking, chatting and looking around. It's a special place just outside Yogja

This restaurant is very popular. So popular that people are willing to wait for their table because they're always full. Decoration wise the restaurant is pretty cool, and also unique. They have a small healthshop which is a haven for healrhjunkies like me, with localbrands essential oils, and allergy free food. The food is highly recommended and I can see why. The portion is large and are reasonably priced and also very very good. I ordered the duck confit it was crispy n juicy inside. The potato gratin as side dish is quite large and well seasoned. I try my brother's scallop dish and it was superb just melted in your mouth. All and all I had a very good time and great food and will be visiting again

This cafe is slightly hidden away, which makes it a lovely spot for a quiet breakfast. We both had banana pancakes and fresh juice. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The food was quick and tasty. The cafe has really funky art too.

We ate here during our stay at the associated hotel. There were some really standout dishes, the duck with green curry was a distinct winner, the tuna as an entrée was beautifully presented and the mushrooms and dates, were such an interesting combination. The waiting staff were really friendly and offered exceptional service.

Ayam Goreng Mbah Cemplung

Visited this humble resto in the afternoon (around 4 PM). They served gigantic tasty fried chicken with delicious-beyond-measure sambal.
Since we arrived long after lunch, the resto was a bit empty. When we visited it again at lunch time on the next day, it was full! We had to wait for an hour, so we decided to leave.
Eventhough it lies in the middle of a kampoong, it always full at lunch time. You'd better visit it after lunch. The good thing also: they have EDC machines! It was quite a surprise for me. So don't worry it you don't bring much cash.
This place is so recommended if you want to taste traditional javanese fried chicken.
