Chamonix Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Chamonix

February 26, 2018 Yuk Petri

As host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924, Chamonix will always have a place in the history books. Its main attractions are Mont-Blanc (Western Europe's tallest mountain) and the many ski areas that face the Chamonix Valley. Steep slopes and extreme weather conditions suit advanced skiers best, but there are also runs for beginners. Just make sure everyone in your party knows a green circle from a black diamond. Oh, and another note for the history books—Pierce Brosnan was here (filming a James Bond movie, The World Is Not Enough).

Restaurant Albert 1er

Pierre Maillet’s goal, as head chef of our two star restaurant, is to conserve the taste of the produce, respect texture, gently combine things and not spoil them by trying to over-enhance them. Having taken over from his father-in-law, Pierre Carrier, he has upheld the restaurant’s traditions by proposing a subtle, modern and natural cuisine, inspired by the surrounding area. A cuisine spanning 5 generations that is influenced by the treasures of the French/Italian Alps : Char and Fera from Lake Léman, snails from the Mont Blanc region, sweetbreads, Dombes duckling, Bresse poulard and local cheese, pork and lamb….Dishes subtly enhanced by the herb garden, overseen by Pierre Carrier: wood sorrel, tarragon, lemon thyme, savory, lemon balm, sage, wild thyme, marjoram or burnet. The Albert 1er’s carte is also influenced by the neighbouring Piedmont region: lemon risotto and « Bottarga di Tonno », crab ravioli on a mousse of curcuma, garden peas and mint bisque, farm goat’s cheese and beetroot gnocchi. From his travels around the world, his childhood in the Toulouse region and training in successful restaurants along the Mediterranean coast, Pierre Maillet has created a selection of flavours and spices with which to season his dishes : line-caught John Dory fillet, citron, tonka beans, turnip confit and hollande sauce, line-caught sea bream with basil in a squid and herb crust, consommé, garlic rouille and croutons; whole roasted Breton lobster served in two ways, with yuzu confit, avocado, grapefruit and Nepalese Timur pepper, or Lobster à la Cardinal with fondant potatoes in coral butter. Perle de la Dombes Peking duckling seasoned with orange and gingerbread, stewed leg and almonds, coriander and homemade lemon confit. Surprisingly wonderful combinations created with seasonal produce and his passion for cooking, creating, inventing and seducing. Hard, relentless work ensures that the simplicity of the food provides an explosion of flavours and enjoyment. Alain Gousse, our head sommelier, will be delighted to advise from the exceptional house cellar – 19,000 bottles with over 1,000 varieties, 646 of which are on the wine list.

We have been to Albert 1er at least 20 times in the last 10 years. It never disappoints. The food is obviously outstanding. Very refined. Some could say "relatively classic french gastronomy". My impression is that the level of creativity has been increasing over the years. It is THE place to go in Chamonix for a great lunch or dinner. Prices at lunch are rather reasonable. The sommelier always has great recommendations. Service is perfect.

We ate here on Christmas Eve at the recommendation of our host. It was apparent on arrival that the wait staff were run off their feet there was only 2 waiters working, which seemed strange to us given it was Christmas Eve, and 1 of the waiters kept disappearing into the kitchen seemingly to help in there. It was nearly 30 minutes before we had water on the table and our food order taken. Fortunately when the food arrived it was all very tasty (there were 9 of us and we all had something different/all were equally pleased with our meals) but everything just took too long, and there was no apology or explanation given for the delay.

From start to finish, the food and service were impeccable. Having just hiked the TMB, my husband and I were ravenous and basically ordered to our heart's content. We started off with two appetizers, the marinated salmon and onion soup, both of which were generously portioned and delicious. The salmon has that smoked salmon flavor, and the onion soup had enough cheese in it to satisfy any cheese aficionado.
We then proceeded to order the 3-course dinner for only 29 euros each. The escargot were cooked perfectly, and I loved sopping up the leftover butter sauce with the provided crusty bread. Both of us also ordered the grilled lamb chops with herbs which were flavorful and tender. As an unexpected bonus, this dish also came with a small salad and crispy french fries. Lastly, we finished off the meal with a huge creme brulee and caramel tarte tartin. Although the desserts tasted amazing, we were stuffed by this point and sadly unable to finish them.
Talk about an amazing way to cap off our TMB hike though. Would definitely recommend this place to celebrate or start off any trip with a bang!

La Remise

La Remise is a "must-try" restaurant in Chamonix Valley with an absolutely fantastic view on the Mont-Blanc, the atmosphere is lively and the wine selection authentic. The concept at La Remise comprises of classical French techniques paired with influences from the current modern British gastronomic movement whilst paying respect to the wonderful regional products. Restaurant highlight: the Chef in partnership with a local producer are dry aging a selection of high quality beef on site. To experience an extraordinary quality of meat in both taste and texture book early to avoid disappointment (Meat dry aged for a minimum of 30 days) - a unique experience by La Remise!

There's something very French about this French restaurant, and it isn't necessarily the food. The interior: all dark ceramic tiles, dark hard laminate tables, and hard although upholstered lipstick red chairs, with an eclectic mix of artwork, bits and bobs, and 'too many things', couldn't have been produced in any other country. The interior's blacks, reds and whites are not welcoming - not even very 'foody'.
The menu is quite traditional: a bit of foie gras here, some beef there, chocolate pudding to follow.
A few of us opted for the foie gras but found the accompaniment overwhelmed it, there was too much purple stuff and the foie gras was cold and hard and sadly couldn't really be tasted.
My beef main was gorgeous, our daughter's roast lamb was equally excellent.
Desserts were a bit disappointing. My chocolate tart was nice, nothing to complain about, but at this price point you expect a bit of excellence.
The high point was a very drinkable red for €25 - if only other Chamonix restaurants would follow this lead. Top marks here.
But overall we won't be rushing back. The dining room is not comfortable, the food is okay, and the prices are very steep for a place beside the cemetery on a busy main road. There are better alternatives in Chamonix.

The restaurant is medium sized and appropriate decor with very friendly staff serving high quality food eg crab ravioli, terrific steak etc. The wine list is small but eclectic but a little pricey eg Ch Musar at E90

A place, a soul a love story! Nested right in the heart of the village of Vallorcine, in 15 km from Chamonix in the feet of tracks, the Coffee Counter is a place where we like the Authenticity ... Dishes, prepared in the kitchen "workshop" opened on the room, are delicious, applied, consisted of transalpine fresh products, worked there of the day. We serve there, among others, big with vitamins salads, the "Mystery", the speciality of the house compound of reblochon melted in morels and horns of plenty, either delicious and frugal prime rib served with fresh, crisp vegetables ... The atmosphere which reigns is the one there of these precious moments which we like: taste a simmered tasty dish "house" between friends, sip a glass of very fresh Chignin-Bergeron in the sound of cowbells

My father and I stumbled upon this restaurant after missing our train, we now go regularly. It has simple French Savoyard food that is very good. If you are staying in Les Praz, Chamonix, a nice afternoon activity is to hike along the river to Argentière and then eat here. It is across from the train station and bus stop, so there is easy accessibility.
