Colonial Church

Reviewed By vmimartins - Guimaraes, Portugal

The Guatemalan are very religious and this is notorious because of the number of churches, especially the Evangelicals, that exist in the country.
The most interesting of the older Catholic churches is the fact that they mix the native religions with the Catholic religious cult and the churches are a sample of this interesting mixture of cultures.
Churches like this one are a good example of the cultural mix.

Cojolya Museum and Store

I highly recommend contacting the Cojolya Association in advance to book a two-hour tour. The tour offers a fantastic opportunity to learn about the Association, including its history, partner artisans, and the design process. During the tour, we met several of the artisans. They explained to us the process of dyeing, using the foot loom, doing backstrap weaving, and more. They also provided really helpful context on how this differs from design and craftsmanship in other countries and gave me a great appreciation for the artisans and the work of the Association. At the end of the tour, they'll show you the museum and you can purchase items to take home.

A fantastic morning of birding in the Rey Tepepul Municipal Park was facilitated by the new trail, Tangara Cabanisi, funded by Audubon Intl. Our guide Rolando Gonzalez is Audubon certified and very devoted to birding in this cloud forested region of Guatemala. He has binoculars and a lazer pointer to show where the birds are. Visiting in the rainy season we were amazed by the Blue-Throated Motmot, the Emerald Toucanets, and many others that were listed in an Email we received right after our trip. Nature in all her bounty, the butterflies, tropical flowers and amazing birds truly not worth missing this trail while it lasts. Binoculars are helpful but they have some to share. Water was good.

I stayed on the lake for 3 months and it took me over a month to get in touch with them, get all my questions answered and organize a trip to come see where they're at and what it looks like. First off, I disliked that they advertise the course but do not specify WHO will teach it (like the 200-hr program). For me it's very important to know beforehand, as I don;t want it to be someone fresh out of yoga school themselves. I didn't like what I saw (and heard from others), so I decided not to register for the 200-hr program here and went to San Marcos instead. There are a lot of yoga schools on the lake, make sure you know what you're signing up for, who your teachers will be, what their references are, past experience, etc. Personally, imho, it takes over 5 years after getting your initial certification before you can start teaching others and giving out certifications. The whole vibe of the place seemed fake and their programs to be thrown together haphazardly. If you're just looking for a cheap holiday with a side of spirituality, maybe it's for you.

Santiago was one of the two towns (villages) designated for the stops on my Atitlan boat ride tour. In contrast to the San Juan of the first stop, Santiago is more like a city. Travelers can stroll along the pedestrian street filled with souvenir shops, or to hike up to the inner area of the city to see more of the same. There are a few restaurants in town that cater to tourist and we ate at one (lead by our tour guide). On the way to visit the Inglesia Parroquial Saintm we walked by the regular market filled with food and regular things for local. At the Cathedral, our tour guide gave us full history of the church and what happened in the history of the church and the city. Unfortunately by that time was ready to get back to the hotel across the lake for a nice and quiet evening by myself.
