The Meiningen Theatre is among the theatres with the richest tradition in Germany. Director's theatre was born here in the 19th century, under Duke George II. Today, the programme includes drama theatre, musical theatre in original language, Concerts, ballet and puppet theatre, as well as a wide offer for children and youth. The theatre restaurant is the perfect place to end an evening. Guided tours of the building are possible, regardless of whether you attend a performance or not.
The reputation of the theater is wide spread and well deserved. The building facade is pretty standard. The house is relatively small, some 500 seats. The interior is rather attractive. There are no bad seats. The acoustics are excellent. We saw the Donizetti opera 'Don Pasquale'. The cast was astonishingly good, as was the orchestra. In an era when the direction and set is usually seriously criticized, these were exceptionally pleasing.

This palace was built in the 17th century and named after the second wive of duke Bernhard I.
We went to see the building with our three children. If you go with children ask for the family entrance ticket, which saves you a lot of money and is also valid for other museums in Meiningen (for example, the theater). In the entrance there is an impressive staircase. After walking upstairs you reach the room where souvenirs and tickets are sold. Then you go on a self-guided tour through several rooms on that and on the upper level.
If you want to take pictures of the Exhibitions you have to pay extra once (I think it was about 2 Euros extra).
We walked through the rooms a little swiftly as our children were not too keen on Reading all the description but liked it nevertheless: paintings of aristocrats and rulers from past times with severe facial expressions, barock style furniture, huge tile stoves, music instruments from the past, even a room with instruments where you could hear their sound...
Impressive was also the little church within the building, and which is nowadays used for Concerts.
There was even a little room at the extreme end of the accessible part of the building where the children could play a bit: it had costumes which they could use to disguise themselves, a corner where they could entertain themselves painting, and little stairs they could go up into a small childrens’ room.
At the end we recommend to have a glimpse at the old barock style cafeteria at the very top of the building (just walk up all the stairs). You can also sit down there and have a coffee and cake (Kaffee und Kuchen) if you feel like it.

The top of the church is a brilliant view over the entire city due to its locality. You can also go outside and see a full 360 degrees

(Thomas Reiter)
