Arctic Museum Nanoq

Reviewed By MUNTH - Lexington, Kentucky

I am an anthropologist, so I am very picky about my museums. This museum was created by a man with an enthusiasm for the Arctic. Hence, it is not professionally curated, but I was surprised at how interesting it was nonetheless.
It consists both of a central building with LOTS of artifacts, photographs, and history of Arctic explorers, as well as a Skansen-like outside, with genuine Arctic buildings, cabins, and even a small church that has been moved there, and where both services and weddings actually do take place! You can explore inside these cabins and imagine living there in Arctic conditions year round, or where military launched their forays, etc. Children will love this, and so will adults that are young at heart.
We had an exclusive guide, who, although new at the museum, gave us a very good tour. All in all, a very good experience, which I highly recommend!

Here you can sit and enjoy the flowers around, just for free! The cafeteria, when it is open, has also nice cakes and good cofee. You can rent facilites also - and sometimes buy small plants or vegetables from their land..
Nice place. My favorite also.

Skata

Reviewed By Tord E - Stockholm, Sweden

It's streets are lined with old buildings, and the streets are still unpaved. Skata has retained what Jakobstad looked like and is still a very living community. It's houses are a fivne example of what the towns looked like before in this part of Finland. Delightful and peaceful and now being cared for and carefully restored. An architectual gem
