Haruna Shrine is nestled in the Mountains. Unfortunately we visited in January and it was very crowded. There were lines of cars from both roads leading into the shrine and very little parking. They were sending 5 people at a time to pray because there was even a line up to the shrine itself. However, the atmosphere remained peaceful and I left with good fortune.

A beautiful spot made famous by anime & manga. It is worth a stop and a stroll, but definitely do not forget the little fried lake fish (see photo) which are a local delicacy. This volcanic lake is surrounded by lush forest-covered Mountains. You can take a lift to the top of Mt. Haruna (Haruna-fuji) for a spectacular view. And the next do-not-miss stop is Ikaho onsen.

This is a 25 min ride from Takasaki train station Bus No. 8 from the west exit (200 Yen per person each way). I posted a picture of the information (includes outbound and return bus times) that I received from the tourist information which is right across from the exit from the station.
So I had planned to see 3 things in Takasaki with my 5 year old. We arrived by train but this was the only thing we did. The place is huge, its more than just a large statue which I believed ( see some pics of the maps of the area). The bus is easy to find and take and drops you off right by the statue. If you cant read Japanese dont worry the bus's I traveled on displayed the names of the next bus stop. Just match the first character of the bus stop on the English leaflet you get from tourist information to that displayed and your set. And probably your not the only one going here.
Well worth the entrance fee up the statue (300 yen) with some great views from the top. After seeing the statue theres lots of small little shops that sells drinks, small things to eat as well as a lot of interesting articles. Given my limited time I didnt really get to see much else of the area but how easy, cheap and quick to get to from the train station I plan to be back with the whole family next time.

On a clear day you can see very far and there are plaquers describing what you can see including the names of Mountains, rivers, and obvious building. Parking isn't free but it's cheap and it's only a 10-15 minute walk from the station. There is a nearby department store (Suzuran) that has a great gelato shop on the basement floor, and a park on the south side of the city hall with water Fountains and caged birds/big big trees. We ate a subway sandwhich and relaxed in the breeze.

When I was visiting this zen temple was booming with the sound of cicadas and glistening wet with the rain drops from the passing typhoon. The buildings are nice (they include a small cottage where a German resident scholar resided for many years), a small Daruma doll museum with different statuette styles from every province and very nice Gardens. Also, mosquitos. A priest can be hired to recite invocations to the Buddha. There is also a souvenir shop. Altogether, worth a visit, although I would have liked the zendo to have been open for meditation.

This is a real good retail store selling handycrafts, souvenirs, bakery, cordiments, sauce, fresh products, etc which you can bring home. We've bought some soba and udon and its just delicious!
If you are happened to be in Takasaki, this is a good place to go.
It is located outside of entrance of the Takasaki train station (same floor, turn left side).

Ropeway across the Harunafuji is the outer rim of the Caldera lake of Mt. Haruna one of JOSYU(Old country name meaning Gumma prefecture) three Mountains of Gunma Prefecture (altitude of 1,390.3 m). It takes about 3 minutes to get on from Haruna Kogen station (altitude of 1097 m) at the foot of the mountain to Haruna mountaintop station (1366 m altitude). The route length is 527 meters and the altitude difference is 269 meters. You can enjoy a refreshing aerial walk that overlooks the Emerald green Lake Haruna, the Mountains of JOSYU and on the sunny days the Kanto plain spreads enough to see the sky tree. Nighttime operation is performed according to the Haruna Lake illumination of December in the year. From the summit you can see the night view of Takasaki / Maebashi and the whole view of the illumination venue. In addition, the first sunrise service will be carried out on New Year's Day from 5:30 in the early morning. Access is about 40 minutes from the Shibukawa Ikaho I.C.
As far as ropeways go, this one is pleasant, but rather average. The view from the cabin is nice, and that's pretty much it. You don't get a nice of the lake from the top of the mountain. But... on a clear day you can...MoreDear 2catsinJP, thank you for reviewing us. Mount Fuji can be seen from the ropeway if the weather is nice. Did you see it? We look forward to your next visit!

I love this museum, it's conveniently located and has a great gift shop. We usually go there when they have special exhibits.
