We walked to the top of the falls. It is quite a steep climb but well worth it. I recommend wearing suitable footwear I myself wear my trusty old Merrels (strapped sandals) Various paths around Piha are closed due to Kauri dieback although there does not appear to be any signs stating this so perhaps not officially closed and as a tourist you have no idea) but we were told this one was open. The view of the falls from the bottom are breathtaking. The pool at the base had a couple of eels swimming around

The Arataki Visitor Centre is the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, with more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline. It's 250km of walking and tramping tracks provide access to Beaches, breathtaking views, and spectacular rocky outcrops, including the Hillary Trail, black sand Beaches, Waterfalls and giant kauri trees. The Park Rangers here will help you make the most of your visit. They know the latest track and weather conditions and the directions to the best places in the Park. If you are staying in the Park overnight, ask for the best camping & campervan sites.
Loved this visitor center and the nature trails at it's location! The views were amazing with well maintained trails. The staff inside the center go above and beyond to answer any questions you might have. Make the effort to get to this beautiful site!

Most people will just hop over the hot sand to immerse themselves in the seawater. Not Me. I`m a geologist and is interested in the black sands and geological history that was laid bare for anyone just remotely interested in geology or geography to enjoy, and what a complex history!!!

Matthias is absolutely wonderful! Decided last minute we wanted to see piha beach. Emailed oh yeah tours and Matthias quickly responded. He offered a same day private tour. Not only was the trip extremely affordable but quite perfect. Matthias picked us up on time showed us a beautiful waterfall along the way. As this is his home town, he described a perfect way to spend the day! This was the highlight of our trip and our special day! I cannot say enough wonderful things about Matthias and his tour company. Strongly encourage anyone who is thinking about seeing piha beach, which I highly recommend to call Matthias!

Established in 2001, we were known as New Zealand Surf 'n' Snow Tours for 13 years. We have re-branded ourselves as Rapu which in Maori means 'to seek' and, we feel, captures the quest to find that perfect New Zealand adventure. During summer, we offer both day and multi-day Surf Tours. During winter, whether you are a skier, snowboarder or an outdoor adventurer we have snow tour options for you.
We Start the lesson at 7am, it was a perfect sunny Day! First Dan explains "How find the rip current? " the differents way to find it and where it' s safe to surf. He knows how to reassure and for me it was important before to jump on the Board! "The sea doesn't try to kill you " : ) after some exercices on the sand and the Board it was time to try on the water!! Perfect! Dan watch out each of us and one by one he help us. For my first lesson I manage to stand up (with the pop up) even If it was for few seconds ; ) He was patient and advise me to improve my way to surf! Thank you very much Dan it was a real pleasure! Next time I would like to follow the wave!

This scenic drive takes you past bush scenery, to observation points for spectacular views and to gorgeous Beaches.
Beautiful ranges; we drove through these ranges during our road trip. It was an amazing experience. There are also good breakfast joints on the way with amazing views. Do make a pit stop for a good English breakfast with awesome view.
View of clouds touching hills is simply mind blowing. A must do road trip; recommended highly by me

A great little gallery at the bottom of the hill by the fire station and opposite the campground. Always a feast for the eyes with everything from photography to ceramics, with many of the artworks and Exhibitions inspired by the local landscape. This is a community run gallery everything is locally produced and handmade by one of the Coast's many artisans.

We are dedicated to spreading the "stoke" of Surfing by teaching techniques that allow you to have fun and be safe in the water. Our instructors are world class surfers who are guaranteed to get you up and riding even it is your first time Surfing.
For me and my girlfriend it was the first time on the board. Our instructor was Phil and he was really enthusiastic about Surfing. We were in a class of 4, which is also the max.
We started on the beach where he explained shortly (+\-5min) what we had to do on the board when a wave came up. Then we went already in the water! I think we did like 30 waves in 1,5 hour.
It was absolutely awesome! Thanks Phil for the great experience and we will definitely come back for a 2nd lesson!
