Gaze out at the azure Adriatic Sea from the sunny beaches of Otranto, in Italy's Puglia region. This historic port town attracts locals and tourists to its 10km of beaches and diving rocks. In town, the cathedral features large-scale mosaics dating back to the 12th century. If you love snorkeling and beautiful seaside views, it's worth making the short journey south to Porto Badisco.

Our visit to Otranto was at night time, with all the Christmas lights and Nativity scenes providing lots of goodwill. Walking through the laneways and passing in front of the Cathedral, the fortress skirting the harbour is definitely romantic. The walls are graffiti free which is noticeable, and the areas were neat and tidy. It was lovely seeing lights through curtains and courtyards. We thought if there were another few restaurants open, as there were lots of visitors, it would have given more choice. We will go back and do a day visit soon.

Admittedly there are many other cathedrals that are grander. However, none have this unique 11th century huge mosaic floor. Having a guide to explain the images is essential to fully appreciating it’s significance. There is also a chapel with the bones of 800 martyrs beheaded on display.

We went, we saw, we left underwhelmed... Unfortunately this place is under serviced in the parking department, then you walk up to a disused man-made hole in the ground that has filled with water...oh, and the soil around it is red!! this is the highlight!

Climbing up the narrow streets of this atmospheric seaside town, you will find this gem of a tiny 9 to 10th century Byzantine church, perched on the top of a hill. Inside, the walls are covered in enchanting frescoes, some fresher than others, but all mesmerising. There is a special mood about this sacred place.

Cape Palascìa, commonly known as Capo d'Otranto, is Italy's most easterly point. It is situated in the territory of the Apulian city of Otranto, in the Province of Lecce at 40° 7' northing and 18° 31' easting. The lighthouse there, recently renovated, is one of five Mediterranean Lighthouses protected by the European Commission. It is often visited by tourists, especially at New Year, since it stands at the point where the dawn of the new year may first be seen in Italy.
The view is quite attractive, but I would not make a special trip to see it unless you had time to burn.

The area of the Lakes Alimini is very beautiful, from Otranto to reach it but it will take a bit 'of time in the car. It 'easy to reach; if you have children with you, elderly or disabled is easier to reach than other Beaches. You can find both free areas and areas equipped with sun loungers and parasols for a fee. It may happen that the water is less clean than in other areas, because there is the mouth of a river or a channel (cannot remember) and there is less current than in other sea areas.

An outstandingly beautiful beach near Otranto has been besotted by ugly infrastructure nearby of cheaper hotels, and mediocre restaurants. I would still visit the beach but stay in a hotel in a better, more exclusive section of the region.

wide, sandy, sand dunes, finest beach in puglia, Italy just north of Otranto in the Salento region,Alimini Beach is a just a few km north of Otranto on the Adriatic
We wanted to take advantage of the lovely weather so went to Alimni beach. There are chairs , restaurant and very clean toilets. You can have a snack at the bar and the staff seem good English,
