Only an hour's drive from San Jose, this dense rainforest remains largely obscure.
We stayed at the lovely Orosi Lodge and spent a morning at Tapanti Park. We took the two easier trails of the three - both go down to the river. We didn't see much in the way of birds or wildlife, but it was a nice day. In my opinion it is not worth going out of your way to visit.

This church is best known for the 1635 appearance of the country's patron saint, the Black Virgin. An annual pilgimage takes place in August.
It is the most important religious object in Costa Rica and an important historical point, too. However, the building itself is comparatively new - present look in has acquired only in 1939. However, the architecture is interesting and somewhat unusual for Catholic churches as it bears Byzantine features. The Basilica, the original rock on which the figure of Virgin Mary was discovered and the miraculous spring are all objects of pilgrimage, so on Sundays and holidays the area is packed - plan your visit accordingly.

I completely agree with another review posted about this spot... It's cool, unique, small, but nonetheless interesting. "The Dreamer" has spent a great deal of time carving the roots from coffee trees into ghoulish faces and other peculiarities.
If you're in the Orosi Valley, certainly check it out.
A word of caution: if you're thinking of buying one of the figures, be mindful of importation laws in your country of regarding wood products.

El Coupal Reserve is a smal nature reserve on the edge of Tapanti National Park in Costa Rica. Its a two hour drive with your own vehicle up to this lodge and smal nature reserve. The rewards are great with a rich nature, a couple of good nature treeks into the reserve and very nice but quite basic lodging. The hosts Beto and Patricia Chawez are taking very good care of their guests, they only speak spanish though but their friendliness as hosts brigde the language gap without any problems.

The Lankester Botanical Garden is a research center of the University of costa Rica, created in 1973 due to the international efforts of scientists and conservationists. Our Mission is the research of orchids and other epiphytes to preserve our plante's biological diversity and to inspire and improve people's quiality of life
Yes, the Lankester Botanical garden is a small, beautifully maintained garden with lots of interesting plants. But the Botanical garden, especially the one belonging to a University is supposed to be also an information source about the plants. And yet I have to see a garden so almost totally lacking labels and general plant information as this one. I counted maybe 5-6 labels throughout the whole area. Actually, a garden in National Museum in San Jose had better labeling than Lankester. The University should know that some people come not only to stroll but also to learn something. Dissapointing.

The church and museum are a beautiful part of this town's long history. It's only $1 to enter the museum. It contains wonderful treasures from when they cleaned out the old monastic residences. They're poorly lit and randomly labeled, yet quite beautiful in their simplicity.

Thanks to Lonely Planet we booked a tour at Finca Cristina, a coffee plantation which even our local colleagues were not aware of. A fully organic approach to planting and growing coffee caught our interest. We had an amazing time thanks to the owners Linda and Ernie who explained us everything on their philosophy from seed to cup in a truly delightful and fun way. We learned so much here during the 3 hours tour and from now on rather pay a bit more for really great coffee!

We are a fabulous birding hotspot located in the heart of the Ujarras Valley where you can watch and photograph birds and butterflies and enjoy a delicious meal, cup of coffee or a beer as you do so. We are Get your Birds! a company focused on birding and natural history tours and we work together with El Cas, a family run restaurant that serves the best traditional food.
A viewing platform with chairs and a counter to lean your elbows on while watching exotic birds come to feeders--all under the guidance of local expert naturalists who help you identify dozens of species. Oh, and then there's that delicious traditional food served by the...MoreWhat more? Lots of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds flying around! We are looking forward for you and ORTH this year ;) .

It's amazing that there is this beautiful, impressive structure with its tranquil "vibe" in the middle of a busy city. Kudos to all who kept the "ruins" preserved and maintain the lovely garden.

I didn't climb as I was injured, but the rest of the family did. The drive down to the river was just as exciting as the wall or rock. The bridge really gets your heart going. The little cabin area was very spare, but one of the most lovely areas ever. Next time we would bring our bags and sleep in the cabin just cause it's so lovely. The employees do not speak much English, but we got along great. They were very helpful and careful with the climbers and everyone enjoyed themselves. Highly recommended.
