Typical Costa Rican cuisine in an open-air restaurant with picturesque views of the Turrialba Valley, Angangostura Lake, and Turrialba Volcano.
This lodge and restaurant is located at the top of a hill and has a great view of Turrialba below. We even saw fireflies flitting around! Service was friendly. The food was okay - good veggies, which can be hard to find in Costa Rica - and some reasonably priced options. But a lot of it was overpriced for the type of food, especially when you know you can get the same things for much less at Sodas and other spots. It seems to be taking advantage of its tourist-guests and either their unwillingness to branch out for food or lack of knowledge that this is overpriced and not "gourmet" eating.
It was a nice stop on our way "home" after a long day of hiking and we ordered options that were more inline with non-touristy prices, so we were satisfied.

Every dish is served as a piece of art. Flavory and intensively colorful, the ingredients are magically mix by the chef. Excellent service. We visited Turire after a long hiking trip to Guayabo Arqueological Park. It was a beautiful day. We missed the beautiful display of tropical flower arrangements in the lobby and notice Gardens and premises showed some lack of maintenance. We were not staying at the hotel but noticed pool and pool area -that are very small- were being used by day visitors.

I know CR like the back of my hand; I've traversed it's provinces for more than two decades. In that time, I have eaten at dozens of "restaurantes típicos" with authentic Costa Rican fare.
I have been to El Sapito on 3 occasions, always in large, family groups, so I have been able to try the majority of the menu's options and I can say, with the utmost confidence, that this place serves some of the best typical food in the country. In fact, I would place it in my top-3.
Here are some of my favorites: tortilla alineada (amazing), pozol, olla de carne, chorreada, ternerito con patacones, filet de trucha.
On our most recent visit, Estrella served us, skillfully and with a wonderful, positive energy.
The only negative issue is that as the central valley has gotten more populated, Cartago and Turrialba seem to get further away. CR needs to figure out how to resolve it's traffic issues.

Upscale Restaurant just outside Turrialba on the high road to Santa Cruz and San Jose. Steaks, seafood, rice dishes. Service is good and the atmosphere is quiet and comfortable

We came across this restaurant by chance as we were strolling through Turrialba. This is a simple place, with some tables scattered around and some paintings for sale on the walls.
Service from the beginning was difficult because we understood there was a certain fear of talking in English and we were left on our own ignored for most of the meal and nearly had to beg for our bill.
Even tough, we ate what was probably the best Chicken Rice in all of CR, we tried again in many places but there was never one that nearly resembled the taste of this one. All in all, I would return here if I ever had the chance.

The first place we ate when we arrived to Turrialba and now a regular date!
I strongly recommend cerdo. It is to die for. This is a beautiful outdoor experience in the small town of El Carmen. To my dismay the are only open on the weekend but it is worth the wait all week long.
The offer a great selection of frescos which are delivered with a carafe for seconds. The food portions are typica of CR...large generous with great variety.
It is a definite visit as you pass through the Mountains to Turrialba!

Very friendly and calm little town. This is the starting point for most of the white-water rafting tours on rio Pacuare and Reventasion. There are nice places to eat and sleep.

A very good Asian type fusion restaurant for this town, the dishes were a nice presentation and well-prepared, tastes were refined for the dishes we ordered, noodle frie with beef and vegetables, chicken sauce Teryaki, noodle Udon noodle and chicken curry. The service and the cleanliness of the bathrooms is impeccable. For this small town, this place is a compulsory stop for the jaded tourists of casado of any kind.

It was too bad that we found La Angostura on the second to last night of our trip to Costa Rica, because it was the best food we ate all trip! We went back the next night for our last dinner because the food was so good. We couldn't believe that this restaurant was not more full of people. Our trip was a bit off-season, and the location seems a bit out of the way, but if you are near Turrialba, this is definitely worth the trip for an excellent dinner.
