10 Things to Do in Nafplio That You Shouldn't Miss

September 24, 2017 Almeta Stockton

Nafplio (Greek: Ναύπλιο) is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was an important seaport held under a succession of royal houses in the Middle Ages as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Nafplio is now the capital of the regional unit of Argolis.

Palamidi castle is really one of the more impressive Castles I've seen around the world. It looks particularly impressive at night with the lights on. Views from the top are fantastic on a clear day. I cheated and drove up there, but the stairs are definitely an option. Worth the effort to visit for sure.

This museum has the oldest armor extant. Also it had a unique ceramic wine cooler from centuries ago and some face masks that no one knows the origin of. I found it fascinating and was pleased that the security guard could offer insights to enhance my visit.

Arvanitia beach

Reviewed By Dilly4472 - Lincoln, United Kingdom

I can see that this might be a useful place for a dip in the sea - even in October it was quite hot - but I saw no beauty in the place. Yes, the walks to the beach in both directions are stunning and the views out to sea are glorious but the beach itself was very odd. It’s a tiny patch of pebbles and a vast expanse of concrete. The beach bar was closed so there were no loungers but maybe the lack of loud music mentioned in other reviews was a relief. Clearly there’d been some attempt at smartening the place up (tubs of plants, pergola, changing rooms) but there was no getting away from the hideous derelict wreck of a former hotel (???) at one end of the beach and the towering shell of some other concrete monstrosity in a state decay above on the cliff. There are dozens of far nicer Beaches in the area.

We also spent 5 euros to take a boat taxi to see the fort to take pictures and get a view of the charming town. I was nice and worth the time to do this. The fort needs a little tlc but we went to the views.

An unexpected find and a bargain at only 2 euros admission, this private museum houses an eclectic and personal collection of items from childhood toys and dining room furniture and table settings to the beautifully-decorated traditional costumes which are characteristic of the area, both for men and women. The collection comes into modern times with a "Circus dress" designed by the British designers David and Elizabeth Emmanuel. (1989)
The displays also include drawings and paintings and there are several traditional looms and sewing machines on display.

Church of Ayios Georgios

Reviewed By Ian C - London, United Kingdom

As is the case of several buildings in Nafplio, the church has a chequered history. Built by the Venetians at the start of the 16th century, it was turned into a mosque by the Turks in 1540 and, after the war of independence, returned to being a church.
The church has fine Orthodox interiors, stunning chandeliers, wall and ceiling murals and paintings in the dome that are thought to date back to the beginning of the 18th century. There are many icons and religious items to be seen including the throne which Otto, the first King of Greece, used when he worshipped here after independence.
It is best to see during the day when some daylight filters into the church. At night it is rather dark.

The well-preserved ruins of the Mycenaean Acropolis and Citadel of Tiryns are more than 3,000 years old. Mycenaean archaeological site in Argolis in the Peloponnese, some kilometres north of Nauplion.
