The bridge through the rice fields is part of many one-day tours that you can book in Mae Hong Son, and it will be one of several destinations. It is nice and scenic (probably even more so during or shortly after the rainy season) and worth a visit.

An easily accessible tourist attraction without having to climb few hundred steps or trek through muddy, difficult terrains to see the beauty of Mae Hong Son. Try to visit during the sunset hours. Very nice sunset views from a cafe "before sunset" behind the temple.

After about 35 kms (from the main Mae Hong Son road) of winding roads this is the end of the road: A small village around a lake with lots of nice photo opportunities.
Take a walk around the lake and have lunch (or whatever) not on the main tourist stretch, but in one of the small local places.
The tea they sell here, is mostly from China.
Not enough around here.

This is worth the trip up the hill. The temple ground is sited above the city with a good view of the city below. The airport, the lake and Wat Chong Klang, Wat Chong Kham and sunset view are all here.
There isa small cafe called the Before Sunset Cafe selling coffee during the peak tourist months till sunset but close early during the summer and rainy months.

I have been here about 6 times now and enjoyed every visit, even visiting same places again and again as they usually change. My last visit here was only just last week, mid August 2017. As most tourist's do I visited the Sutongpe Bridge, unfortunately on my visit there were no flags or other ornaments around, but still nice to walk over and enjoy the rice fields on either side. As a matter of fact I was the only person on the bridge whilst i was there, the benefit of the off season. Of course I visited the mountain Temple, driving around the lake and visiting these Burmese style Temples. Where to go to eat, I can highly recommend the Salween Restaurant right on the lake, opposite the Police box, good and delicious as well as large servings and very reasonable priced.

The view of this temple across the lake is the iconic picture of Mae Hong Son and it is magical. If you saw nothing closer, it would be enough.
Inside is not exciting. Whilst the much vaunted paintings on glass are beautiful and the elaborate wooden throne impressive, the overall inside of this Shan style temple comes nowhere near the beauty of its Thai counterparts.
The most unusual and intriguing feature for us was an image of the Lord Buddha woven in basketwork. Just lovely and a real work of dedication.
The real disappointment was the monks who refused to acknowledge us or respond to a Sawatdee khrap in any way. They appeared far more focused on lounging on benches smoking cigarettes. A very damaging reflection of the sangha, which others work so hard to uphold.

A welcome break and time to stretch the legs during a long drive of twisting and winding roads. It is said you can see 9 Mountains from this viewpoint and although I didn’t count them it certainly has impressive views none the less. A mountainous region and the day we were there the visibility was very good and the scenery spread out before us for a long way, lots of people taking pictures! Not just a 180 degree view but 360 as you’re at the top with the vistas making a very good talking point of which way you are going and where will you end up! If you have a look at my pics you will see some of the road which was in front of us which is common for long distances in this area, steep roads including U-turns which either rise or fall beneath you. You have to stop here and I hope you get the views we did. A very good viewpoint which not only shows you where you have come from, but where you are going also.

A really nice market with a beautiful setting next to the lake and great atmosphere. It is like most other markets with food stalls (really cheap and great food!) and souvenirs. But most items are hand made and quite unique. A great experience when you are in Mae Hong Son.

Another beautiful example of shan architecture. This temple has an elaborate tiered wooden rood and also features a bronze Buddha statue from Mandalay. The day I visited there was no other tourists around and it was so nice to walk around and take in the beauty of the temples, wat and buildings.

We thought this was a pretty cool experience! Very different. You walk around the village and they seem to be just living their lives... Making money from the tourists... They hand make things and sell them at a very reasonable price. They welcome pictures and are very friendly!
